As we look to cement UK-US relations (at least in our family) it's looking like we will be shortly visiting the US for the first time.

(The plan is sketchy and fluid, but we should be looking at 2-3 days exploring Boston ahead of a 5 day chill down in Orlando).

Suggestions for interesting venues to consider visiting in either location are invited along with any 'how to survive the US' tips.

(We have done a fair amount of world travel - though it's been a while now as we hunkered down when 'this and that' arose).

Boston travel will be by taxis/ public transport from our hotel in Danvers. Orlando has the alarming prospect of us in a hire car.

We should also have the benefit of two 'local guides' in Boston.

On our list for Orlando is the Kennedy Space Centre and at least 1 park visit (Disney Hollywood Studios has been mentioned).

As many people are aware we do gravitate to things like history, science/ engineering, the natural world - and 'anything else'.

We will try not to bring the UK weather with us, but there's no promises.

A BIG 'Thank You' in advance for any advice and suggestions... :)

Enjoy the dark skies!

Boston:

  1. Have a picnic at the Boston Common. Many photo ops here.
  2. Fenway Park. Cheer on the Red Sox! Have a real Fenway Frank. Take too many pictures of the Green Monster.
  3. Cheers bar. Not worth going inside. Just do the Tourist thing and have your picture taken with the sign to prove you've been there. Move on.
  4. Old North Church.
  5. Down the road from Danvers is what used to be a charming & scenic town called Newburyport. I haven't been there in years, its probably a tourist trap by now. Anyway, if you go, be sure to stop in The Grog - used to be the best watering hole around. If not, there are many good seafood restaurants around.
Orlando:

  1. KSC tour - gotta do it. Those Saturn 5 boosters are huge! Be sure to check the NASA launch schedule - you may be able to catch a launch.
  2. Epcot Center - gotta go at least once in your life. Plan for morning or evening visits and avoid the midday heat. You can't see it all in one day, so do some research to see what appeals to the entire group.
  3. The Orlando Science Center. I've not been there, but friends tell me its a blast!

That's all I could think of off the top of my head. Have fun!

It's a very long time since I visited Florida, but I would certainly second the KSC visit. Check the times of SpaceX launches and maybe watch one (they're averaging a launch every 3 days at the moment). And for the Disney: treat it as street photography - you will see many things beyond the UK normal ;-) - and perhaps check the times of one of the night parades with fireworks. Cheesy? certainly. Spectacular? Definitely.

You're not going that far south, but Miami/Ft Lauderdale has lots of sights to see - a meal at Joe's Stone Crab on South Beach is an experience not to miss, and the Everglades are amazing. There's a boardwalk called the Anhinga Trail which gets you up close and personal with lots of wildlife - and no bars!

And good luck. Take a burner phone if you've been rude about their senior politician... ;-)

We had friends which had timeshare there and we went a few times. Not sure if Busch Gardens and Daytona Beach were mentioned. On the way to the space centre there was a massive eagles nest on the boulevard but we couldn't stop. I think we were on a bus. Too many years ago. They figured it was about 400 pounds back then if memory serves.

You should get some nice shots at Daytona Beach. I'm assuming this peer is still there.

I’ve not been to Boston for many years but we really enjoyed our time there - either end of a ski trip. It’s worth following the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile route that takes in 16 historic buildings. I think most are free or may ask for donations but a few charge. One end of the route is Boston Common which means you can take up Craig’s suggestion of a picnic there! The Trail has its own web site - https://www.thefreedomtrail.org/.
