Been an Adobe PS user and fan for a long time but with the excitement around DXO I figured I would purchase PL8 Elite and give it a spin, I bought it on July 25th.

Today they released a new version, a little bit over a month since my purchase and it would cost me $119 to upgrade.

DXO changes the verbiage but there really is no difference between them and Adobe, if you want the latest and greatest you have to pay. At least with Adobe I get the updates for the year and access to the Beta version.

Personally I find PL8 to be a bit clunky, some of it I believed was part of my learning curve that contributed to this in the beginning. After getting used to it and becoming more educated I still find the user tools and interface better in Adobe and really like getting updates frequently to the new tools and updates.

I should have read the fine print!

Too bad you didn't ask. The same thing happened to me but that was PL1. PL2 came out a few months later. I didn't read the purchase details either. Doh! I usually try and let people know about that. That includes any company both stand alone and subscription because there are things to watch out for. Try to do the trial and or purchase within 30 days of a new release however Sept 2 is pretty early for DXO. It used to be around the end of October and they have been moving that date up every year. Hard to predict these days.

I was using it mostly for Prime NR for LrC but then switched to PureRaw.

I was confused when I went to my account and saw that there was an expense on a purchase I made 40 days ago, I thought it couldn't be correct. I reached out to them and was basically told so sad, to bad.

I do use PR for NR but will stick with Adobe PS as updates are included and the tools IMO are superior. They have been rolling out some nice tools for NR and sharpening is improving. If PL was an annual expense with updates included I might feel different, but either way you pay. I'll stick with what I know, pay a little more but receive comprehensive updates.

question them or wait till black friday

I'm really OK with it Peter, they have their policy, I don't like it but it's not worth the hassle.

I've been using PS for so long it's like getting dressed, it's just easy.

I enjoy using a range of software (it being a core aspect of my photographic hobby) and can afford it - for now...

I want to try the latest features and spend as much - or more - maintaining my DxO software as I do with Adobe.

I can certainly understand other people having a different approach and choosing where to put their hard earned.

If I had to 'drop' paying for something, it would be Topaz Labs, then DxO - I'd stick with the last versions of both.

(As mentioned, Black Friday/ sales events can be very beneficial - but on this occasion, I've updated PL-E to v9).

I'm the same. I like the latest tech and I never missed an update since the old days of PS starting around 2007. I tried so may along way. Remember Bible Pro and RAW Shooter that turned into LR? Silkypix for a while which had nice colours and results but not as user friendly. I can afford it as well but I'm just enjoying a more simple editing life these days.

I see DXO has put some work into masking for v9. Guess that will make the DXO users happy. I like how like how these advances light the fires under all the competition so they can't just sit around. :)

Competition is good for everyone (including those who get paid to compete)... :)

I'm sure you have seen this. I keep links to a few of his videos. Adobe of course because those are the best :ROFLMAO: Bit of a different character. He does like his dramatic titles. Is this the end-game for Lightroom? 4 months ago it was the other way around. :)

Yeah, I have LrC, and DxO PL9. I think I am going to drop Topaz PAI but keep Gigapixel (best upscaler), and let Neo lapse except for free up grades. (bought a lifetime license for a song, but rarely use it.)
I also just sold my Yoga Snapdragon as it won't run LrC or Neo or PL9 or PR5.

I had Topaz Sharpen AI and DeNoise AI. When PAI v1 came out Topaz offered me this. If I purchased Gigapixel they would throw in PAI for free. I had no real use for Giga but I figured why not. I was intending to upgrade to PAI 2 until Adobe released Denoise AI. Today I only have Topaz Sharpen AI on my system.

To not hog this thread I will start a new one. I've really have not figured out if upscaling or cropping is better for wildlife. This is strictly for web presentation. LrC now also offers Super Resolution. I tried it once but I'm still at an impasse between cropping and upscaling.

I've been using Luminar Neo for several years, and I like the user interface. I purchased the annual Pro license for a year to try out the bells and whistles, but I don't like their emphasis on AI and it's easy to over-process an image. The GenErase AI is cumbersome and inaccurate, and besides that I'd rather learn from my mistakes than erase them. The Sky AI tool is simply unserious, and anyone who uses it should be shot with a Polaroid Socialmatic. The tools I use most often are the "Essentials" like Develop, Enhance, and Self-Restraint (tm).

So I bought PL8 couple months ago. Yesterday I upgraded to PL9 (no, I still don't understand their pricing scheme) and took a few hours to process some recent images in Neo and PL9. Photolab's tools are superior to Neo's in every respect (but slightly more difficult to use) and the results are better: color rendering, lens profiles, noise reduction, etc ... and the Local Adjustments are simply fantastic.

I'll keep my "lifetime" license of Neo (until they announce its End of Life), but I've already ditched the annual Pro license.

It's just their business model and not the only perpetual licence company that does that. Version upgrades in the fall and if you buy it within 30 days (for DXO) of the update you get it. Don't know about C1Pro or ON1 time periods but it's the same thing I believe. People get ticked off at Adobe by not understanding if you choose monthly payments you have to commit for a year. No other perpetual company will give you half your money back if you decide to stop using it after 6 months. Nor will Adobe give you some money back if pay for the whole year and decide to quit part way through.

I know at times I'm guilty of not reading all of the info of the contracts I agree too. Their lawyers make them long on purpose :) All we can do is pass on key information and hope people ask.

After 3 days of fooling around, I find the masking to be better than LrC. i.e selecting a sky with a tree where in LrC the masking misses the sky areas between the branches. PL9 is much more accurate.
I'd compare it to the updated selection tool in PS, where before it would miss the spokes on a bicycle wheel and now it grabs them and ignores the background.

There are bunch of quick work arounds to fix that using LrC but if you think DXO is better that is good. It will light a bigger fire under Adobe.

No software wars on here tis good.
Wow to some of the dxo adobe topaz war of words is tribal humorous ridiculous all at same time its editing software for gods sake hardly worth some of the harsh words.
We are a civil bunch on here
