Hello from Hong Kong

Hi all. I’m an American photoguy and design business owner from the Chicago area. I’ve a BS from the Institute of Design, and later Mfa Honoris Causa. I had an amazing 20+ year career doing annual reports and corporate communications before teaching all these topics at a private art college.

I’m pretty much retired now, with a tiny place in Hong Kong for 8 months annually, and an another home in the forests of the Ozarks.

I’ve had every great camera system out there, from analog Canon f1, Nikon f2’s (x4) Bronica and Mamiya 645s, to Hasselblads and Sinar view cameras. I’m now using Leica M10M, M10r and SL3p, and all that great Leica glass— and a Canon R (just sold it) and R5 with 3 canon Rf zooms, but a more cherished collection of 8 Zeiss primes in EF from my 1Ds through 5D4 days that I now convert to the R5 and SL.

I shoot on the streets of Hong Kong these days. i run a meetup group with over 200 followers for whom i organize shoots and topics.

We bought Macintosh to run the photo business in 1984, got in on the bleeding of of the technology with ALL the top gear in my studio, Aldus and Adobe Masters Master, lots of top international Clients. Then started to teach to give back, corny but true. Taught design and photoshop, then started the photo major there, including all curriculum, darkroom, studio and workstations. Left for Beijing to photograph the Hutong neighborhoods bt ended up working as an Art Director there.

I’m pretty much retired now, with a tiny place in Hong Kong for 6 months annually, and a another home in the woods of Missouri.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm pretty opinionated about lenses and certainly have a lot of Canon DSLR and mirrorless experience, but I'm looking to get the R5 out of the mothballs. I really think I've had almost all of the EF lenses out there. I keep the R5 in the US (with a RF14-35 and RF100-500) and leave the R in Hong Kong along with a 24-105ƒ4 as a SE Asia bad-weather travel kit. I bring the 50 1.4 Milvus back and forth, being my long-time favorite lens. I can probably shed light on, and will certainly tout, all those other Zeiss primes that are currently stored in a dry cabinet 7200 miles away. I'm certainly curious about the RF offerings, but am bummed that they rely on in-camera corrections. I'll ask questions as it goes.

Oh, I was a BFA and MFA professor (and dept chair) of photo and visual communications. I'm good for a few topics I hope.

Welcome to the forum Bob. I look forward to seeing some of your work and also hearing your opinion on lenses. Maybe one day I will be able to convince my wife that I really "need" a Leica 50mm 1.4 Milvus. It must be a very nice lens to handle and use.

The 50 1.4 Milvus is for Canon EF mount. The 50 1.4 is a Summilux for Leica M. I really don't care for the color of the Summilux on a M10R, ro it sits with my M10M and a yellow filter. I bought a Voightlander 50 APO Lanthar for color.

I'm divorced twice... lost millions but worth (almost) every penny.

EDIT: upgraded the 50mm Summilux ASPH today to the vII (2023, close focus). It’s back on a M10r and SL2s and color is wonderful. I'm just irresponsible.

I'm currently working on the second million. I gave up on the first million because it was too difficult.

Everything comes and goes. If it doesn’t go, it either breaks or becomes obsolescent. Just make some good art, take care of health and others.
