Vending machine or self-service checkout?
Some machines operate by coin weight. Some coins from another country may end up weighing the same as local currency.
I found this out several years ago. A low-value coin from one of the European countries was detected as being a £2 coin. This upset retail outlets with affected self-service checkouts. The fix took a couple of weeks to be rolled out, IIRC.

At the current market rate, 82 pence (GBX) is equal to approximately $1.10 USD... I'll never know if I got a good deal or was on the losing end.
