Locations Scouting without Leaving Home

The post by @StevenAunan "Naches Reclamation" reminded me of the value of using Internet Maps for scouting locations.

One day I was doing that and came across this scene and I knew I wanted to photograph it.

As the location was just outside of The Dalles, OR, I kept it in mind for the next photoshoot at Stonehenge on the Columbia.

The area is in the middle of Nowhere, Oregon so I decided to wait until full moon. I discovered a high pressure sodium light on the neighbors property, so I waited until the moon was further West, but not setting. The camera POV is looking North, so you won't see the galactic core.

NOTE: I received permission from the property owner to have access to their property. The last time I drove by there was a multitude of farming implements stored on the property and around the one room school house.

I have 68 locations saved in Apple Maps so far, and I'm planning a reconnaissance trip through the coastal California mountains from the Oregon border to Clear Lake. If the data is available, Google Street View is another useful tool for helping determine if a location is worth visiting or not.

No, but I'm in Yakima for the week and I think I'll include the Old Ion Highway (what a great name) in my route home. And if I go that way, Black Rock City is just west of Winnemucca. I have zero plans to attend Burning Man, but I would photograph the vacant city if that's possible.

As you are heading on 95 to Winnemucca don't forget to the "little" sidetrack on Fields-Denio Rd (NEV 140) to Nev 292 becomes OR 205 to Fields Station.

To let you know the entire population of zip code 97710 (including Fields, Oregon) has a population of about 120 people. Usually not a waiting line of locals.

I do this every year in Portugal. I look for birding locations. While staying in Santa Fe we took a day trip to Hernandez to find the spot where Ansel took one of his most famous shots.

Somewhere around here apparently. There a church further in. It was a very uplifting yet slightly depressing as there no sign or marker. We asked at local restaurant to verify it. Great food.

Yes and he guessed the exposure because he was in a hurry to get the shot. The negative does not look anywhere near the final prints. He was a master in the darkroom. We went to a show of his work in Toronto. I walked up to a poster sized print and asked if they would take a cheque. The attendant told me it was priceless.

I use Google Maps to mark places on my "Places to visit" list. If I see a really nice location in a picture, such as on a website advertising for a landscape photography workshop, I will make a screenshot of the image and then upload that screenshot into Google. Google will find similar photos and usually there will be a photo that has the name etc. If I am lucky, someone will have uploaded a shot from the location, or of the same subject, and put the location or gps coordinates in the information about the image. Once I have the name of the place, I put it into Google maps and then I can verify from photos in Google maps that it is the location. Then I add it to my list.
