I went down to Maryhill, Washington to visit the Maryhill Stonehenge. It was built by Sam Hill in 1929. Hill was a rich guy in Klickitat County. Maybe the last one.

I'd been to his art museum. It's a lovely facility high on a bluff above the Columbia River gorge. It's in an equally remote place as his Stonehenge, but at least it's on the highway. The museum has an impressive Rodin collection. I'd heard about his Stonehenge, but I'd never gone to look for it. It's not in a place you'd stumble upon.

Sam built his Stonehenge for a variety of reasons. Obviously as an homage to the one in England. But it also houses a war memorial and a family mausoleum. Sam has a tomb in the vicinity.

The Maryhill version is oriented the same way as the neolithic version so special things happen on the summer solstice. I was there in October, so I can't vouch for that. I did go at sunrise, though.

Stonehenge on the Columbia is a monument to the 14 Klickitat County member of the American Expeditionary Forces that dies in World War One.

I try to get there yearly for night photography and always come back with mixed results.

Great job @ShipleyNW
