I've been wanting to shoot motocross but thought I didn't have any facilities near me....until I found Tomahawk MX in Hedgesville, West Virginia about two hours from my house. I called them the other day and they said they're happy to have photographers out, just stop by the check in hut and grab a neon vest and you're welcome to walk anywhere on the inside of the track.....her last words to me before shutting the window? "Don't get hurt". So off I went...

I walked pretty much everywhere, hitting the inside and outside turns, the ups and downs and even the waaaaay up jumps. I won't deny half standing behind trees as they zoomed past, as I was barely several feet off the track. I'm certain access like this won't last once someone gets hurt and the lawyers get involved, but it was pretty dang thrilling in the mean time. Here's a sample and I'll post more once I get done culling the other 7k.

As you can see from the metadata, this was all shot on the R6 II with a 70-200 f/2.8, shutter priority of ehh, 1/1600, 1/2000. I think the aperture was around f/3.2 for the day.

Really good set of shots, be warned though - motorsport is REALLY ADDICTIVE ;-)

Next time (there will be a next time) as well as the high shutter speed shots which are great for catching flying dirt etc. try a few slower speed pans to get the wheel / background motion

Here is the rest of the album. I had a hard time separating great shots from mediocre shots as I’m not a motocross guy….so here’s what I guessed was good or interesting.

This is my main workhorse of a lens and I love it. It's very light weight (only around 2.3 lbs) lens. I've been able to hand-hold it for an event...

This camera is FANTASTIC. I'm a dog sports shooter, so very fast indoor action with a lot of obstacles to shoot in and around. This camera does a...

I have had this lens since it came out and it is my lightweight go to lens for walking around in the city and using my infrared-converted camera...
