Hi all,

Im a new member, had my RP for a few years now and generally happy with the results i get.

However some of my bird and ice hockey "action" pics aren't always in focus - I'm assuming its the speed i'm shooting at?

I'm looking to upgrade the cameras body and wondering what model of R series people recommend, I'm not professional and don't make any money from my photography.

3x Puffin pics recently taken for reference.

Hi, welcome to RF.

It would be great if you could show us some pics of birds or other critters with the eyes clearly showing. The eyes need to be in focus. It is usually easy to see if that was successful. If you don't have such pics now, go to your local city park and take pics of a duck, just one mostly filling the frame, in good light and clearly showing at least one eye. Ducks are great subjects because they are usually easy to find, don't usually move fast, yet have good color and texture for assessing image quality.

Welcome to the forum.

My default bird photography settings are:
  • Shutter — manual
    • 1/3200 second
    • pre-continuous shooting
    • 30 frames/second
    • electronic shutter
  • Aperture — manual
    • maximum for lens
  • ISO — auto
    • manual exposure compensation
    • histogram in viewfinder
  • Focus — auto
    • dedicated back buttons for:
      • animal eye detect
      • spot
  • Recording — raw
Note: Defaults are stored to C1, C2, C3 so that they can be retrieved almost instantly after being altered whilst shooting!
