There is a chance you may have view the Sun or eclipse using the pinhole projection method. With the eclipse coming up I was wondering if I could use this method not only to safely view the Sun, but to photograph it as well.

I can safely say...I've never heard of anyone doing this before.

The pinhole method is commonly a pinhole in a sheet a dark paper and a few feet away a sheet of white paper for the rays of sunlight yo land on.

Because I couldn't hold the two papers as well as the camera and manually focusing all at the same time... I had to get creative.

1) Cardboard roll from discarded aluminum foil roll
2) Aluminum foil
3) White cardstock
4) Blue painters tape

Cover one end of the cardboard tube with aluminum foil and tape into place. Using a straight pin poke a tiny hole in the center of the aluminum foil. Cover the other end with white cardstock and tape into place.

Cut a rectangle hole (horizontal to the long axis of the tube) a couple inches from the white end of the tube. This will be the viewing port.

Place on a tripod and aim it towards the Sun. This is easier than it sounds. Watch the shadow of the tube on the ground and move until the shadow in the smallest. (same method as if using a telescope)

I just wanted to know if it could be done and I had fun trying!

You're always up to something, Dean!

How the heck do you track the moving sun with this rig?
