I have had my R5 for 4 years and 6 months ago bought the RF 100-500 but for awhile my aviation just does not look sharp from other photographers that I have seen, what am I doing wrong? Should IS be switched off when over 1/2000th? It was a 108 degrees outside so am I expecting too much?

1) AF-1 photo was FL 450mm - Auto ISO400 - 1/2000th - F/7.1 - Electronic - Crop/aspect ratio 3:2 (is this the issue) - Case 4 with Eye detect sect to Vehicles - Metering Mode Evaluative Metering

2.) Fighter Jet photo was FL 500mm - Auto ISO400 - 1/1600th - F/8.0 - Electronic - Crop/aspect ratio 3:2 (is this the issue) - Case 4 with Eye detect sect to Vehicles - Metering Mode Evaluative Metering

Other than converting to jpeg I have done no edits to theses two photos. Same camera and this lens and another the wildlife photos in the Natl Parks are great so is the R5 not the great for aviation? Am I expecting to much because of the heat haze and just being a butt-head or what do you guys think?

Solution
I live in hot climate 6 months of the year makes photography tricky cool day in summer for us is 35c we've actually got 36c next week not even summer so heat haze for sure maybe iso could have been 100 looks bright and sunny
Heat haze could be the culprit. It’s a more plausible explanation than either equipment failure or user error!

Lenses are generally sharpest 1 to 2 stops down from wide open. You can always run the image through a program such as topaz AI or Photo AI to sharpen and remove noise. Also underexpose 1/2 stop to increase saturation. Or run the image through Cannon Digital Professional Software to adjust the exposure in RAW.

The F-35 appears to have been shot around noon, and almost nothing looks great at that time of day...

Thanks for all the replies and the overall consensus of heat haze. I was about read to jump the Canon ship. Yes these photos were around 11am/1pm because of when they were flying and it was about 100/108 degrees outside, I was out today (only in the mid 90's) and they seem to be better. One more question are you using Auto ISO or would you set/change the ISO as you are shooting?

I shoot birds mainly and always use auto iso, the only time i change it is if i want to under or overexpose.

I always shoot RAW in Manual mode with ISO set to Auto, so I only need to take care of shutter speed and aperture on the fly. A great convenience, indeed. Should I have some visible noise I run the image (RAW) through Photoshop ACR Denoise AI. Photoshop has come a long way in this department. It really works like a charm. I have the original R6 MK1. Please take a couple of test shots with Auto ISO and try to gain some experience. Good luck to you! :)

I primarilly shoot birds, and the occasional aircraft

I try to shoot fully manual. I have had too may shots where Auto ISO has gone off the deep end and I find the camera is at ISO8000

I think I found the settings so I am better now LOL, was getting worried about this setup. I took this today (love the cloud puff at the bottom) and did basic edits with no cropping. Read/watched a lot over the weekend and I like the idea of ETTR. Settings: FL 400mm - ISO 800 - 1/2500th - F/7.1. Yes or No? Picture 2 is straight out of camera no edits but just converted to a jpeg to post here. Thanks to above for who replied with their comments as this seems to be a group of photographers!
