Hello I have been shooting with my r7 for about 8 months now, with zero issues. I recently bought 24-70 F2.8 USM lens, when I shoot sports and EFC or Mechanical, I will get the error 20 and have to restart my R7. I have updated to 1.7.1 firmware, I have notice when I press the AF assigned button(back) and shutter button at the same time is when this happens or triggers it. The camera had a long pause at first and them would start shooting, now after the firmware update and I cleaned my lens connectors, the pause is short and the error 20 only happen once.

I can shoot all day with my other lens

F5.6-8 100-400mm STM

Thanks for your input

Hi Gary,

Sorry to read of your woes. Karen has an R7 and this occasionally gets paired with our RF 24-70 F2.8 lens without any problems arising (at least to date).

You've done most of the troubleshooting things I'd have tried - cleaning the contacts, checking the camera (and lens) firmware, turning off/ removing the battery and re-starting. Have you tried different memory cards? (Unlikely, but you never know - and it's an easy thing to do).

'Error 20' is cited by Canon USA as being - 'A malfunction with the mechanical mechanism has been detected', which doesn't sound particularly good. Have your tried using just the ES and seeing if the issue arises? IF it persists you may need to contact your dealer/ Canon and see that they advise.

Not sure if this helps, but there you go - good luck... :)

Yeah, I got it to do it with another lens today, it happens on 3, the update is better, still an issue.

Firmware Version 1.7.1 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Improves security features. A password must be set initially.
    a. Adds the ability to review the history of any changes made to the password, network information, or other settings.
    b. *For more information, please refer to the 'Setting a Password' section in the Advanced User Guide on cam.start.canon.
  2. Enables firmware updates to be performed when the camera is connected to the internet and new firmware is made available on Canon servers.
  3. Fixes an issue in which the camera may become unresponsive after simultaneously pressing a button assigned to [One-Shot AF→Servo AF] and the shutter button.
  4. Fixes an issue in which image stabilization may stop working when using an EF lens.
