1. In the 11th century ‘Rabi’ Estate was owned by the Viking King Cnut (aka Canute II the Great).
2. The Castle was built in the 14th century by the Nevilles, who held it for nearly 400 years.
3. The Neville ownership of Raby Castle ended after their unsuccessful ‘Rising of the North’, which they plotted here at Raby Castle.
4. After this, the Estate was held by the Crown until purchased by Sir Henry Vane the Elder in 1626 (along with nearby Barnard Castle and Long Newton).
5. Raby Castle was a Parliamentary stronghold during the English Civil War.
6. Today, Raby Castle remains a private home and is the seat of Lord and Lady Barnard and the Vane family.
