  1. Yes
just got of phone from my bricks and mortar family camera store where I get corporate discount.
As I’ve bought everything thing from there except second hand r5 second hand back pack.

SD cards to double in more in price next 6 to 8 weeks. Maybe you guys heard the same.

Shortage of components or components used in EV cars

From what I can see, prices have already increased here in the German market. And, I understand it is at least partly due to there being a very large demand for everything associated with NAND Flash technology, which includes camera memory cards, as well as everything that has a power cord, or battery and has settings which need to be saved in the event it doesn't have energy.

From what I have read, AI data centers are one of the biggest reasons for the price increases. These data centers use a huge amount of NAND Enterprise SSD storage and the companies building these data centers are paying the highest prices because they have to have it. EV cars also use it, as do every other modern car regardless of if it is gasoline powered or diesel. If it has electronics inside, and is relatively modern then it uses NAND tech. Smartphones also depend on it So the smart phone manufacturers are also buying up NAND components for their flagship models.

Little, relatively cheap items, such as camera memory cards are a very low prioirity and therefore will probably face shortages in the future. I had a discussion with a team leader in the IT department of a large global tech company here in Germany this past week. He is a student of mine and he said the current estimates are at least shortages for the next 18 months. And, when there is a shortage, that means prices are high. Hopefully in the next 18 months, a new type of technology will be introduced that will make NAND tech obsolete for AI usage and the markets for us little, lowly consumers will relax.

Prices are on the rise here in the US as well, though I can't say by how much. Memory cards were probably the last "low cost" item we photographers had. Let's hope that the 18 month window doesn't grow any larger.

B&H had a sale on Lexar 2TB CFE4B cards last Sept for US$350.00 each. I bought (2).

Today, those same cards are US$1150.00 each!

 😵‍💫

It's only going to get worse. If you see something you need and can (barely?) afford it, buy it. This shortage and extreme pricing is not going away anytime soon - as said above, it may be years before world-wide chip production capacity increases to the point where prices stabilize.

It amazes me that folks buy 2 TB memory cards for their cameras.

Back in January of this year I went on a photo vacation for three weeks. I had a 256 GB card in my camera. When I got back, the card was only half full with room for an additional 4000 shots.

If you fill up a 2 TB card, where do you put all the files? My main drive on my laptop is only 1TB, and on my desktop it is 2TB.

I'm a stills photographer and never shoot movies.

It would be fine with me if Canon soldered a 2TB card into the camera, because I could shoot a lifetime with it without filling it up.

Whenever a bad trend occurs, for instance very cold weather, or a sharp stock market decline, there are always predictions that soon it will get even worse.

example the gave me a $130 card will be could be $300

If he has confidence in his prediction, then he wouldn't sell them today at $130, and instead hold on to them for when he can sell them at $300.

they have stuff all left actually gonna buy pro master rugged

Price increases on storage and memory are very much real and are happening now.

The last memory card I bought, a Lexar 128Gb SDXC UHS-II last July, cost $30.
Today's price, $75

The last CFE-B card I bought, a Prograde 256 GB in December, 2023, cost $100.
Today's price, $189 (for a 240Gb Prograde card.)

But the biggest atrocity now is RAM. Last August I got 2 32Gb sticks of Crucial DDR5 for $140.
Today's price, $725.

Crucial makes RAM for PCs and laptops. Micron Technology, owners of Crucial, shut down that brand in order to focus on sever memory for AI. That's where the money is today in that business.
