I love the Sigma 17-40 with my R7! I considered the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 before buying the Sigma 17-40 f1.8. It’s fairly expensive at $919 which is $260 more than the 18-50. The 18-50 has more reach but I preferred the 1-1/3 brighter aperture of the 17-40. I was also sold on the internal focusing and build quality of the 17-40. It’s quite sharp wide open at all apertures from the center to the corners. In some comparison tests the 17-40 out-performed some of Sigma’s prime lenses. Plus, I found the bokeh of the 17-40 quite pleasing. Example below, shot at 40mm f/1.8.

Fast, sharp, and lightweight! A great lens
This is my main workhorse of a lens and I love it. It's very light weight (only around 2.3 lbs) lens. I've been able to hand-hold it for an event...
