Do you have any thoughts on Canon's new announcement? For $120, they will upgrade the R7, R10 and R50 so it can overlay four different cropping guides in the viewfinder.

Separately, I'm planning to sell my R7 (possibly for the R8) and I wonder if it would fetch a premium if I sent it in for the upgrade.

I do not own the R7 anymore but I doubt that I would have paid $120 for something that I have been doing for years without any guides :p

From the point of view of convenience. You need to send the camera to them adding shipping costs to those $120, I do not know if the cost of shipping it back is included and to all that you need to add how long will take all this process. I do not think that the whole process will take less than 3 weeks.

From the point of view of added value, I do not see that much there either. Many users hate the rule of 3rd grids in the viewfinder. I myself would not pay any more than what the regular market value of the camera is at the moment just because it was updated with cropping guides.

Just my opinion...

I think for someone without the understanding of crop, and is learning composition while not wanting to learn post-processing, it 'might' be a useful tool.

If it's included out of the box, but paying more than $100 to add the feature... I do not know.

I think it should be included in the purchase price and available out of the box. It's kind of like car manufacturers building certain features into their cars and charging extra, either one-time or recurringly, for them to work.

I’m hoping it goes over like a fart in church, so they don’t get the idea to do it with useful features.

I agree - The page says for the Cropping Guide to be unlocked❗️Is it already installed and Canon simply enables it❓ If so, in my mind, that's dirty pool😡

Does this portend a trend in their cameras?
That is a scary thought and I hope that it isn't a harbinger of things to come. It does follow what several major auto companies are doing by activating features built-in but not available until you pay a fee post purchase.

It really pisses me off seeing Canon doing these things. Asking photographers to send them their cameras risking whatever could happen to those cameras during shipping to add something that could have been released with the camera firmware for free. Really? Come on!

This harkens back to the SLR days where you could buy and swap out various focus screens for different types of photography/situations. It's a money grab targeting entry level photographers with their entry level cameras, hoping they've heard comments about poor composition and will think having something in the face while shooting will fix it, because some of their shots can't be fixed in post because they've cut off parts of the subject while sticking their face dead center.

They'll get buyers, but I don't see a trend here.
