I am very impressed (and somewhat humbled) by the images here. Food for thought in terms of subjects and striving for quality:).

I spent a couple of hours this evening at a local nature reserve (RSPB Lakenheath Fen) trying out my new RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens on an R body. This is a random shot of some gorse but stopped down to improve the DoF. Straight from camera so no PP. I do use Paintshop Pro but really need to do a lot of editing, hence this "as is" shot. I may have over-shrunk this - I use FastStone Photo Resizer. First post so please be gentle...:giggle:

Took out the bird kit the other day. R7 + RF100-500.

There's a rookery in a park I go to a bit. It's one huge tree that attracts hundreds of birds who build their nests high up in the branches with thick foliage to give them privacy. You can hear them, they make a lot of noise, but they're hard to see up there. I got lucky when I looked up and noticed a hole in the canopy and was able to get a shot of this nesting GBH.

After the chicks are old enough, the birds leave the tree empty for the rest of the year. But the following year, they all come back and do it again.

Red Breasted Sap Sucker. I heard this guy before I saw him. He was sitting on the back side of a sign post, pecking away on the metal sign. Go figure. He looks like a bug on that post, doesn't he?

Quick photo from a new lens. I'd wanted to go out in the backyard, but as my time allowed for that, it began to rain. I moved the camera and tripod onto the back porch, and just as I noticed this fellow on the suet feeder, I took a few shots as quickly as possible. There is a piece of window screen between the bird and the camera. I also realize I need to look at getting a better tripod. This inexpensive one I was given is tough to adjust with the heavier lens.

Incredible images, both of you and I love the breadth of them as well, from landscape to close up intricate workings of the clock and the furnishings of the rooms. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Hali,

Cheers - much appreciated! :)

Nostel is a fascinating place to explore (this was our second visit - on the previous one we used our Sony RX10's, so it was fun to reprise with our R's).

We're back! A huge 'Thank You' to all of the contributors during our absence - what a fabulous haul of inspirational images to return to! Wonderful. :)

With nearly 3,000 raw files (plus iPhone shots and GoPro footage) to chew through there's plenty of processing fun to come (for Phil).

Eyeing you up for lunch.
Well, if you look at the EXIF, it was lunch time…

They’re perched on a decrepit building, in a cemetery, but I couldn’t find a way to incorporate both elements. If I showed the building, they just looked like big black blobs. If I showed the vultures, you couldn’t see the building. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I did once run across one perched on a gravestone…but of course all I had was my phone.🤬

Along the same -but much funnier - lines there is a flock of vultures that like to roost on a McDonald’s sign near here. Same problem, although even a portion of the Golden Arches in frame is recognizable.

A couple of the newly blooming irises from our yard. Canon R7, Canon 85 mm RF, f/2, focus bracketed and blended in Photoshop. I also replaced the background with a couple of the old photos I blurred for this purpose.

This is my neighborhood, my valley. It's in the shadow of Mt Si (pronounced Mt. Sigh.) Out here in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, we get weather, and when conditions come together, the weather and the landscape and the light make for wonderful photographs. It doesn't happen all the time, but a few times a month, in all seasons, you'll get those days, or maybe just a few hours, when everything works out right.

I can see Mt Si from my house and I keep an eye on the light and the clouds. Last night we were between storms, so the rain cleared and the sun started sneaking through the broken clouds. I spent the last hour of daylight visiting a few places that I know take the evening sun well.

A gentleman never tells, but since you asked, yeah, they went through post, like all my stuff. Been doing it that way since the film days. Nothing fake, though. Clouds are real.

I am going to our zoo this year at least once. It's been a while.

You live in a very picturesque part of the country. Great set of images.

Phil,
your zoo images are ALWAYS amazing. I'm inspired, and since the weather is finally turning away from winter I should head off to the zoo!.

Hi Mike,

Cheers - much appreciated! :)

It is most humbling to discover our images have both entertained and inspired others.

Hello Phil,
I must thank you for the beauty of your art, sharing and comments. I really like your photos, which always make me happy and I always look forward to new ones. With permission, I will allow myself to comment on this photo. I cannot express what fascinates me so much about it and what keeps attracting my attention. Perhaps the combination of plan, tonality, color, a certain spatiality and the disruption of symmetry by the person in the foreground. Maybe it is something else entirely.
Nevertheless, please accept my tribute and admiration for this piece.
I have the impression that the photo has written itself in my head and I will never forget it. I still don't know why, but I feel that way. I will remember it in 5, 10 or 30 years. It is really not only beautiful to me, but you can feel some energy from it.
Let me also thank you for your beautiful comments. For a non-native English speaker, they are an inspiration for me to better understand English. I often discuss your comments with my English teacher, and we both enjoy the beauty of the language and the formulation of your sentences. Thank you.
