Hi

When i take my CFexpress card out of the camera to transfer shots to the computer, and then put it back in, the default card has moved to card 2, so next time i shoot it records to the SD card. I want it so even if i have removed and replace the CFexpress, then that is the default card. At present i am going into the menu and resetting it back to card 1.

Can it be set up to always default to 1 when present?

I have seen this discussed many, many times and no one’s had a solution. If you do, you’ll be my hero!

What camera, and what setting?
I have it working on both my R5 as my R5ii. Since this topic was about the R5ii according to the tag, I just checked my R5ii.

Took 2 photos to the CF card, switched the camera off, removed the CF card from the camera, took 2 photos to the SD-card (only card in the camera at that moment), switched off the camera, reinserted my CF card, switched the camera on and camera was set to record to the CF-card and took 2 photos that were written to the CF card.

In the attached image my settings for my R5ii, but the R5 had is similar. In the yellow menu page 1/6 I have set recording to "Auto switch...

Hi Mark,

As far as I know - and frustratingly (for me) - 'No'.

The only way I've found is to remove the battery before you do the card download, then replace the card when done and finally the battery.

(Of course this relies on the user remembering to do this, which in my case is 'infrequently').

This is possible with R5ii (and R5 also) . See here for some clues: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1851159/0

(hope posting the link is allowed).

Somewhere when you set the card to record to, to CF-card there should be the possibility to set a priority. If there is a CF card with space, the camera will first record to the CF-card.
I have set it up myself (do not remember the exact steps I took) and it works.

Take the card out, don't close the card door, replace card (all while camera is off) close door. When you close the cover, the camera senses no card in slot one and defaults to slot two. Works the other way as well.

Yep - this answer - leave door open, transfer photo's and replace card, close door and all will be the same ;-)

Hahaha! One of my pet peeves with my R5! I think it’s a good idea that the camera is smart enough to realize there’s no card and switch to the other one…but how come it’s not smart enough to switch BACK when you put the card back in?

Kinda’ dumb, but my workaround is to leave the camera on the desk with the door open while I pull the images off. A more proper solution would be to have a second card to swap in, but I’m too cheap.

Now, excuse me while I go put the card back in and close the door….(and thanks for the reminder).

Due to awaiting moderation, my earlier post (#3) in this thread only became visible later. I just point it out, since contrary to most of the posts here, it is possible to have the camera default/ prioritise to the CF-card.

Ok did the take the card out, don't close the door, and then put card back in, and this works, so thanks. Not ideal but good to know.

Yeah it prioritizes the CF Express card (in my case), but if you take it out and close the door, it panics and says “OMG! NO CARD! SWITCH TO SD!!” So far, I’m ok with that, but when I open the door again, and put the CFE card back in, it doesn’t switch back to that card - unless I go back in and tell it to.

I get that it’s trying to keep me from doing something stupid like going out to shoot while my CFE is in the card reader on the desk.

Well ok then.

If I transfer photos to my computer, I take out the CF-card and close the door. Once transferred I open the door and insert the CF-card back in the camera. In the past it switched to the SD-card (or vice versa when I had recorded my photos to the SD). Since I changed a priority setting, it always begins to record on the CF-card.

In the attached image my settings for my R5ii, but the R5 had is similar. In the yellow menu page 1/6 I have set recording to "Auto switch card". Under "Record/play" with the photo camera icon I have set CF-card (symbol for CF card with a "1" inside it. When I select that line, the "Record/play" option screens comes forward. If I hit the "Info" button I can toggle on and off the priority for the CF-card 1.

With the Priority option checked, my camera starts recording to the CF-card as soon as there is one in my camera.

Since I changed the setting, I have never shot the CF-card until its full, but I assume once the CF-card is full, the camera will record to the SD-card.

Hi Jan_K,

Genius status - well done indeed!

You're Karen's hero (R7), sadly (for me with my R5) I generally like having Card 2 as the priority, which doesn't appear to be an option?

That aside, top marks... :)

Phil

(PS. You don't happen to have worked out a way to get Zebras for Stills by any chance? ).

Thanks, but I got my knowledge somewhere on another forum. I noticed card 2 could not be set as the priority, which seems a bit odd, but didn't mind as I wanted card 1 to be my priority.

Can't offer any help with the zebras ;)

Holy hell! It works! I've been scouring the bowels of the internet for about two years and this is the first I've seen this.

I kept missing the damned check box

Every time I’ve asked about this, I’ve always been told it was a glitch. Some even offered a convoluted explanation as to why it was a GOOD thing, so I’ve been just living with it.

Feeling a little stupid this morning (well, every morning, actually…) I went back through the manual. I feel somewhat vindicated because there’s no mention of “priority”. In fact they don’t even show that menu.

Wow, thanks, seems not just me having this issue, i too completely missed the priority option. Now set up on my R5 Mkii, just tested and goes to card 1 all the time as i wanted it too, Jan if we ever meet, remind me i owe you a drink (or two)

In my first post in this topic I had a link to another forum. When replying here (since I had my R5 and R5ii set up for this, so knew it was possible), I first try to find the setting in the manual of the R5, but could not find it. So I used the link, as I was not near my camera.
Had a look at the manual after I posted my settings here (after checking on my camera) and can't find it in the manual myself either.

Regardless, you are now my hero. You’re up there with Nick Page - in his R5 setup video he explained you have to turn on the damned joystick. The default is that you have to press a button first. This caused much profanity.

THIS!!

Canon couldn't make it any more difficult, but it's possible. But I shouldn't dare them.
