Hello, how do you use the canon app in areas where there is no signal, you can't use the location, if I shorten it in caves? Is it even possible to use the app in such cases?

Hi Borr,

Which app are you talking about, and what are you using it for? I'm assuming Canon Connect, but that might be wrong. The only thing I use that app for is getting GPS coordinates. If that's what you're using it for, your phone needs to see the sky. Same with all GPS apps. If you're using it for something like remote shooting or image transfer, it should work in a cave. As long as you can pair your camera with your phone over bluetooth, if you're in range, it should work even in confined spaces.

Your cell signal doesn't really have anything to do with it. As far as I know, you're not going out to the internet.

Canon app Camera connect version 3.4.0.8
It was not possible to connect the camera to the phone... the app wanted wifi anyway

While Canon Connect will work over WiFi, it also offers Bluetooth connections, which is the option you're looking for.

In the camera, start with the WiFi/Bluetooth menu item, then select the phone icon and go from there. On that same camera settings page you'll find the "GPS device settings" menu item where you can choose "Smartphone" as your GPS device.

This screen shot from my phone shows the connection to an R7, but I currently have 3 bodies connected over BT right now and have had another 4 or 5 different DSLRs connected at various times over BT.

I have tried using GPS from phone via the connect app (bluetooth), but find the connection drops in and out all the time.

Hmmm? Mine works flawlessly. All my DSLRs had internal GPS, so when I went mirrorless I was disappointed that those bodies didn't have it. I liked built-in better than through an app, but the app is my only option now, so I've gotten used to it.

Would love to use the app for remote shooting, but since all my cameras are set up for BBF, that appears to not be possible. I guess I could pre-focus on the bird feeder and then shoot remotely, but tracking and all that wouldn't work.

How well the app works connected to the camera and how well the gps works is dependent on the phone itself. If the phone doesn't have a good gps system then the gps information might be inaccurate or sporadic. The same with the Bluetooth connection/Bluetooth version. When I bought a new Samsung phone two years ago, I saw a dramatic improvement in how well the app stayed connected to my EOS R, and in the gps location accuracy when compared to my older Samsung phone.

But now, I use a Solmeta gps receiver mounted on my hotshoe for gps data. It is a much better solution for my EOS R than the phone/app combo.

The Solmeta GMAX EOS2 geotagger for Canon cameras will use the last known gps location settings while inside a building etc. Of course, the location would not be exactly accurate, but at least it records a location. I really enjoy using this unit on my EOS R while traveling. It works flawlessly and is easy to connect and use.

I have not owned the Canon GP-E2, so I can't say if it also has this capability.
