DxO Pure Raw is pure magic at times

The joy and agony of auto ISO. Took this image of a puffin flying back to the "rock" at Elliston Puffin site at the end of the day. as you can see from the exif the ISO was 25,600. I was going to toss it but thought maybe I'd just try and see if I could salvage it with pure raw. I have the original with some LR adjustment and the pure raw DNG with the exact same adjustments. I wouldn't print it, and definitely would never use it in competition, but it is a good reminder what our current cameras, with good software, are capable of. Don't ask me why it was at f/29. I have no idea.

There is there thread about the R6II AF autofocus. A recent bit of a chat about how these days we can get away without the need for fast expensive lenses with modern day NR apps. It would be nice to have an RF 600 f4 but that is out of my range unless I win a lottery.

Wow, that's amazing - DxO PureRaw to the rescue. I've never tried to shoot at ISO 26K, but seeing what denoising software can do (PureRaw in specific) eases the "fear" of boosting ISO in low light.

I’ve found in extreme cases like yours, Topaz makes things a little too “plastic-y” but it doesn’t seem to be the case here. I’d be curious to see what Topaz would make of the same image.

I just ran a screen print through Topaz. Not the same at all but...

I shoot a lot of low-light stuff and I use Topaz as a finishing touch all the time. I tried to find a raw file of my own that I'd run through Topaz, but I don't have anything this bad. My ISO tops out at 12,800, but they're nowhere near this noticeable and they clean up nicely. So, screen prints. Also, I didn't have anything in my catalog shot at f/29.

I purchased Photo AI when first released. I did have Sharpen and DeNoise AI. Topaz offered me Photo AI for free if I purchased Gigapixel so I did. Topaz offered another year support for Sharpen and DeNoise but that would never happen again. All off their focus was towards PAI. I never really had a need for Gigapixel but the offer made it less expensive than purchasing PAI alone.

I was a bit rough at first but Topaz put a lot work into it. I was planning to upgrade PAI v2 but Adobe Denoise came out. I kept Sharpen AI and used it if it if I really need it. I try not to as most of OOF shots never get past my first cull. Last update it got was in March of 2022 but it is a mature product and handy in a pinch.

This was PAI v1 shortly after release. A model but I like these planes. It was ending it's flight when I go there so I had to hurry and I got blurry

We can "get away" with higher ISO but it still isn't ideal. I think any of us wildlife photographers would love a 600 f/4 (I saw someone there with one and a 1.4 Tele) but most of us don't have infinitely deep pockets. But even at f/4 if you are shooting at the edge of the day you need help with NR. There are so many good choices out there, this is one of them.

I use DXO and Topaz and with Topaz I stay away from their autopilot, simply stated, it over compensates.

I used the original JPEG posted, results most likely would be better with RAW but this was the final Topaz output.

Guessing im in minority here im a single purchase editor. PL8.

After selecting camera way back when 22 did normal you tube rounds and 30 trials etc and finally camera club.

LR Topaz C1 PL and Luminar.

Went to a camera club where I know president about hour and half away but great bunch of people, my genre of course weather/storm/lightning photography plus equine and minimal editing which coincides with lack of skill and ease of use any way most of club LR of course some PL and fastone darktable think one topaz they seem to think PL would be best as not really much if any masking so I went with it.

Dont get into the chest beating about software if I want LR have access to daughter in laws. Shes a wedding photographer and in her words
LR PS essential for her.

Latest object removal in LR is nice though.

Just time your purchase with Dxo products for Black Friday.

I feel a bit of an outsider here - I use a tiny bit of denoise in lightroom when processing but have never used any other programs. Will have to look into it one of these days but at the moment I don't feel the need - printing at A3+ to A0 doesn't seem to be an issue. Yeah I know "Weirdo" lol

Not at all. Do you use manual denoise in Lightroom or Denoise AI?

Just checked and my usual 'pre set' is set to manual / luminance 4 / detail 50. just works ;-)

I used LR's manual NR for many years. Always worked great but sometimes I needed that extra little bit. If you use Lightroom Classic then Denoise AI is already available which you are paying for. When/if you are in the mood try out DXO because it is a very good product. Don't forget to try out Adobe's version as well. If you are on an older version LR6 then Adobe Denoise AI won't be available.
