Great shots Phil. You’ve captured Abbortsford beautifully. Popped along there last year, we are not far away in Kelso. The study is my favourite room. Sadly the garden was looking a bit sorry for itself when we visited. Cragside is also well worth a visit if you’re near Rothbury.

Managed to get out and about yesterday, at Holy Island. Wildlife photography is new to me so still a lot to learn! Not frightening the little blighters off would help!

Hi Mike,

Cheers - much appreciated!

We visited Abbotsford shortly after a(nother) national deluge-fest, the gardens were just about hanging in there, but the wider grounds were a tad soggy (as were we!). Nice enough morning though and the house is a real treat - inside and out.

We visited Cragside in 2023 (timing it just right to get absolutely drenched) and cycled from Beadnell Bay to Holy Island in 2021 (timing the tide just about right so we didn't get drenched) - both are great recommendations and well worthy of a reprise.

Glorious images of beautiful creatures (non-compliant wildlife being a regular obstacle to success - but also one of the joys of the challenge).

Thank you for sharing... 🙂

Lovely crisp images of some beautiful animals. You've really done them justice. You may no think so after getting wet but worth the effort from a viewer's perspective, so a big thank you to both.:D

Hi Ian,

Cheers - very much appreciated!

The YWP offers fantastic photographic opportunities (many animals can be viewed wire/ glass-free) - and this visit was well worth getting drenched for.

A fun (and dry!) weekend at Chester Zoo - with a mere 3,000 raw files to chew through.

In the meantime, a few shots from our visit to the Kielder Forest in Northumberland, England.

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite/ Nik, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio 2).

Hi David,

A terrific example of nature's thrust reversers being deployed - hopefully a hard landing was averted...

(And what a wide-eyed little cutie!).

Waikuku Beach, yesterday. First sunny day for ages, and unseasonably chilly.

Processed using LRC's Adaptive profile, tweaked a bit, with a mask on the fisherman to lighten him up a bit.

Hi Gareth,

We live about as far away from the sea as you can get here in central England, but this 'man vs ocean' epic shot has us sensing cool and fresh briny air.

(And blue skies, what's that all about?... ).

Well seen and caught (and processed!) - thank you for sharing... 🙂

We've had a spell of very nice winter weather around here recently. It was cold this morning but warmed up considerably by midday.

But unless there's snow, it's hard to shoot in winter. The skeletal visages of the bare maples and alders dominate the landscape, and whatever the weather, they have to be dealt with.

Fog helps a little. It introduces its own set of photographic problems, but it gives me a few options with those bare trees. B&W is always a foggy option, but it can be used to soften up color pictures too. So, I stayed close to the river this morning amid the cold morning fog.

Hi Ken,

We totally agree about combatting 'winter drabness' - particularly in the absence of added value provided by a colour warming sun, bleak snow/ frost or just the right level of fog (ideally with delightful angel beams - but dream on in that respect in most cases). Having said all that, we do love winter B&W!

That being the case, you can guess our favourite two shots...

Well done for getting out there - and thank you for sharing... :)

A splendid winter shot - dramatic leading lines, a huge sky and an evocative subject.

(We'd much rather be 'taking the shot', than diving onto the snow to try to save it!).
Thanks, Phil. That photo is from Aarschot, Belgium. I was on my way to take my daughter out to lunch, and stopped by the local soccer club on a whim. I didn't think I had any good photos until I looked at them later...

After a week of post-zoo raw file processing mania interspersed by a whole bunch of 'real life' stuff (family support - and Baldur's Gate 3... ), it's time to wake up and smell the flowers... :)

(Shot raw and creatively edited using: DxO PL Elite/ Nik Collection, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio 2).

Phil

Today I had a lot of fun doing some portraits of a fellow photo club member, with her 2 identical triplet sisters. We had sort of planned to do some outdoor shots but I was worried about bad weather so I rearranged the furniture in our big family room to set up a make shift studio.

In the end we got some fun shots. What beautiful women they are and hard to believe they will be 80 on Sunday! They are doing a Caribbean cruise for the next week to celebrate their birthdays.

Portraits of multiple subjects require a bit more planning, like increasing your aperture to pull focus and watching out for shadows one might cast on another. Overall, I am happy with the results. I shot with 2 studio flash units, a fill reflector and my favorite old painted canvas backdrop.

Most of the shots were at 1/125th sec. at f/8 and ISO of 200. A few are at f/11.

First real day out with the new R6III. Man trying to work with a 15" screen compared a 27" and with my eyes has not been easy. I was told las summer I'm getting cataracts. I noticed that to working on these so I don't really know what I'm seeing. Tomorrow I'm getting stronger reading glasses.

Bad day for Kermit. Pretty heavy crop so I'm not sure.

I had to crop far too much on this one to be of any use. I'm only showing it because I've never had so many in focus shots with swifts before. One was near the Botton of the EVF and made a 90 degree turn up and AF followed it up until it was out of view. AF is definitely better than my R6II was.
