1. The earliest record of Rockingham is in the Domesday Book of 1066, which states the site was held by Saxon lord Bovi. The Norman castle that sits here today was built later on the instruction of William The Conqueror.
2. In 1544 Edward Watson was leased Rockingham by King Henry VIII and he converted the castle into a Tudor residence. Rockingham was subsequently besieged and damaged during the English Civil War.
3. St Leonard, a medieval church, is situated in the grounds of the castle. It was destroyed during the siege of the castle, but was later rebuilt.
4. The writer Charles Dickens visited Rockingham on several occasions and often performed in his own plays in the Panel Room. His adoration for Rockingham inspired many of his novels, including Chesney Wold in his novel Bleak House.
5. For 5 years Rockingham was let to an American (Victor Emmanuel) who made various improvements - including installing central heating! The castle has been home to several generations of the present family since 1971.
