I know that this lens is often referred to as a “kit lens,” but it is really an absolutely fantastic L series lens. It has a useful focal range, is reasonably bright at F4, has image stabilisation, and outstanding image quality. What’s not to love? It’s the lens that is on my camera 80% of the time.

I just bought myself an RF 100-500 also.

This is the 2nd to last of the RF lenses that I have been wanting. The only one left is the 85 f/1.2. Going to be a while before I can afford that one.
Love the RF 100-500mm and love the RF 85mm f1.2!!! Like you I said I would wait on the RF 85mm. Unlike you, I lied to myself 😂😂

Unlike Tim, I have a serious GAS problem. I just picked up the RF 24-70mm f2.8 and can’t wait to get outdoors to put it to work. Unfortunately, a wind chill of -40°C says, not today😡

Over the past few weeks I sold off several lenses I was no longer using. Since the end of last year I have been wanting to get the Canon RF 100-500mm, 100mm macro and if I have enough funds, the 14-35mm. What is holding me back is there are no deals going on right now, nothing refurbished at the Canon Store and no Street Price deals at Canonpricewatch.com. Back at Christmas I could have gotten the 100-500mm refurbished for $1999, CPW had it on a Street Price sale from a Canadian store for $2100. Sadly I had not completed the sales on some of my old lenses so did not purchase. The 100-500mm list price at most US retailers has gone up $100 to $2699 so I will just wait. Even used at MPB and KEY have gone up; not a supply issue as MPB has a dozen or so in stock.

I recall seeing that Canon USA had a disappointing 4th qtr. the end of last year so maybe they are reluctant to have any special deals. Perhaps Canon is concerned that Japan might be hit by the tariffs that our new leader is threatening. Oh well, I'm earning some interest on the money in the bank.

Well, my post from yesterday must have nudged my guardian angel. I got a notice today from Canonpricewatch that the Canon Store has the RF 100mm macro as refurbished for $999, down from what the usually charge which is just under $1100. A new one is running $1199 at most online sellers. With sales tax it was $1082 and I got free shipping so overall happy.

I wanted this to replace the Tokina 100mm EF macro but this focal length is also good for portraits and while it is an f/2.8 and not as fast as the 2 portrait lenses I sold, it's still wide enough to produce some nice falloff behind someone I'm photographing. The SA adjustment ring on the new lens gets mixed reviews. Some people like it, others say it's not worth using so I will see.

Just over a week ago I got the RF 24-105 f/4 L. Some good prices about at the momemt and sold my EF version II. It's my walk about lens and its lighter than the EF version + the adaptor.

Finally saw a decent reduced price for the RF 100-500mm lens so I bit the bullet and ordered it; it should be delivered on Saturday. The price for new ones seemed to go up after the 1st from the Christmas period when I was not ready yet to make a purchase. The official Canon dealer set price is at $2699 plus sales tax, most were giving free shipping but our sales tax is 8.25%. I found a used on at Robert's Camera which is a reputable online and physical store in Indianapolis. Anyway they had a refurbished lens with the usual accessories plus the Canon zip up lens case for $2190 in Excellent condition. From the images at the website it looked like the only small blemish was on the base of the tripod foot, otherwise clean and near perfect.

Now I will sell my Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens.

Interesting to see US prices compared to UK. The current typical selling price for the 100-500 from a UK retailer is $3523. I can buy one from B&H in NY for $2699, pay $61 shipping and $563 import tax which makes it $3323 saving me $200......however, I can buy one from a Grey Importer for $2329 delivered. I think they get the stock from the US and somehow sell it well below the UK retail price. I'm afraid I buy all my new gear from grey online dealers now. Panamoz in particularly are brilliant, their stock comes from Hong Kong and comes with a 3 year warranty to replace the 1 year one you'd get from Canon. Their price is a bit dearer for the 100-500 at $2466.

However, getting back to what I have bought recently was 3 LN-E6P batteries which were $79 in B&H compared $122.80 from the only Grey Importer that advertises them for sale . The UK recommended price is $147 each. The problem is you are not allowed to ship lithium batteries unless they are contained in a device here in the UK( I assume that's allowed in overland postage) from the US they simply won't send them due to shipping restrictions which are presumably by air.
Luckily I had a friend coming over from NY so he brought the batteries in hand luggage when he came to visit. That was a $200 saving!

and $563 import tax which makes it $3323 saving me $200......
Interesting. I get some gear from Japan or Europe from time to time and the seller always warns I will be liable for any import taxes but I never get charged any. The item is delivered with no other charges.

I too now only use Panamoz for lenses, as they offer a 3 year warranty. Got a friend who had issue with a camera from Panamoz, it was sent to Canon to get sorted and Panamoz covered all the costs with no issues. My first purchase with them was when the 200-800mm came out and people were waiting months to get one, i placed my order with Panamoz and had it within a week, am now saving hard to get the R5 MKii, as the price is down to £3160 compared to £4499 in the main camera retailers in the UK, a substantial saving.

I ordered the iShoot tripod collar bracket for the RF 100 macro. The lens is a bit heavy and with extension tubes for macro work I figured it would balance better and it makes it easier to adjust from horizontal to vertical or just rotate for compostion. Canon makes one as an accessory but they charge $200 for one. I got this one on Amazon for $45 but used up some Amazon points so it didn't really cost me anything. There were no instructions in the box, I had to look at some of the pictures on the Amazon product page, the plastic collar will only mount to the lens in one position, then you fit the metal collar tripod foot bracket over the plastic collar. Lots of Amazon reviews complained that the collar does not rotate easily and I also noticed this. So I put a couple of small dabs of silicone grease between the metal and plastic that I had out in my workshop and now it rotates a lot smoother. I also figured out that the Canon LZ1324 lens case would work with this lens and the tripod collar attached. This case was made for several Canon zoom lenses, I found one on eBay in nice condition for $18. I like lens cases for when I am hoping into my truck to head out to take pictures, I set all the stuff on the rear seat floor so the cases protect the lenses until I get to where I am going.

After getting the R5m2, I now have two of the new Canon LP-E6P batteries and two of the previous LP-E6NH. But I only have the single-battery chargers that came with the camera bodies, and I'm going on a trip this summer. So I picked up this 4-channel 60W USB-C PD charger from SmallRig, and I'm hoping it works properly.

Both of the Canon batteries are 2130 mAh. I have a 60W PD USB-C power brick for my MacBook, and B&H quotes the following recharge times:

2040mAh : Four units fully charged in 2 hours
2400mAh : Four units fully charged in 2 hours and 50 minutes

I received my refurbished RF 100-500mm lens yesterday. Unfortunately, it arrived after dark so I couldn't really take it out to give it a try. Hopefully, this week I will get some shooting in.

I just took delivery of a Sirui P-325FL Carbon Fiber Monopod with VA-5X Video Head Kit. It is a very nice monopod with a lot of interesting features. I wasn’t really planning on buying a monopod but I saw this for a deep discount during on of B&H flash sales for just $129, so I bit!
One thing that was a nice extra is the carry case it came with, which is quite a bit bigger than is needed for just this monopod. I found that it also will fit my Pro Media Gear 343 tripod, which only came with a flimsy nylon bag (despite the PMG being an amazing tripod). Here’s a picture of the case with my PMG tripod in it and the new Sirui monopod sitting next to is.

Really Right Stuff LCF-55 Lens Foot for my RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM Z. I'm very pleased with it. You'll find it under the 24-105 Z, but it fits the 70-200 Z just fine, as far as I can tell.

With the stock lens foot, the balance point with my tripod gimbal left half of the Arca-Swiss clamp gripping nothing but air. Canon's shape for their lens foot angles about 45° forward. The shape of the RRS LCF-55 is straight down. For my setup that means 100% of the clamp is gripping the lens foot, making me feel much more comfortable.

I could have chosen an adapter, but so far there seems to be a dearth of adapters available for the Z-series and an adapter adds extra "height" to the lens making it tougher to fit into the carrying case. Eyeballing it, the height difference between the stock foot with an adapter plate versus the RRS foot is about 1/4". Oh, and I got enough lens-specific adapter plates as it is.

With the shape and extra length of the LCF-55, I was nervous about how it would feel when hand-holding. I was very pleasantly surprised. For me, the extra length worked well for using both the zoom and focus rings from a balanced hold.

Pros
  • Confidence in security on my tripod mounds
  • Slightly lower height profile compared to Canon's stock foot with an Arca-Swiss adapter
  • Feel and balance when hand-holding with foot attached
Cons
  • Price
  • I don't know if it'll fit with a PZ-E2 Power Zoom Adapter (not a concern for me, don't own one)

Over the weekend I reached DEEP into my pocket and acquired the RF 100-500 lens. It's pricey and a little heavy, but so far it seems like a keeper. But the Canon supplied foot is a little uncomfortable to use hand-held and doesn't appear to adequately balance the lens on a tripod. The RRS foot, however, does look like an upgrade and might be worth investigating. Thanks for the tip.

Hope it works well for you if you go that route. I also have the RF 100-500 and it is a great lens. I use the stock foot with an adapter and I'm satisfied. I didn't even think of getting a replacement foot until I bought the 70-200 Z.

Finally took the plunge and upgraded to the R5 MKii, arrived today. Now in the process of working out all the settings, a bit different to my R6 Mkii
