Bought a Godoz V1 round flash. Not sure why because I can't remember when I last used a flash. Probably because the round flash took my fancy having not used that style before. Now to actually use the thing, lol.

I basically only use my flash for macro photography. Occasionally I will use it for selling something on ebay...like my old flash.

I've been on a binge lately.

  • two action cameras, a DJI Action 3 and an SJCam SJ11
  • a Film Devices magnetic car mount kit (for the amazing price of $110)
  • a used Lensbaby Composer Pro with Sweet 35 optic from MPB
The SJ11 was half the price of the Action 3, and both produce quality video with excellent stabilization. The DJI has better features, including some voice control commands, but I think the SJ11 is the better value.

The magnet kit is capable of mounting my Canon R7 inside the car (I haven't tried it with the R5M2 yet), and I can easily mount the action cams inside or out, on any window or even on the roof/hood. It appears that I got one of the last kits from Barn Door in Connecticut, because they're sold out now. I had previously purchased a Delkin Fat Gecko dual-suction mount, but the magnets are MUCH easier to move around. Retail for the kit is around $400. I searched the interwebs for weeks, but couldn't justify that price, and then stumbled on the Barn Door outlet. It's possible to piece together a kit from Amazon, but the Film Devices kit is complete and the magnets are superior because they have multiple 1/4" and 3/8" mounting points. I was lucky to find it.

I just bought myself an RF 100-500 also.

This is the 2nd to last of the RF lenses that I have been wanting. The only one left is the 85 f/1.2. Going to be a while before I can afford that one.

Now the question is if you are going to mount your R5M2 to the outside of your car and drive with it? I don't care how strong the magnet is, I just don't think I could do it. I guess I am not brave enough....but one of my first managers in the early 90's once told me that there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity. A line that I have crossed many times in my life. :ROFLMAO:

Thank you Santa.

Congratulations! You must have ranked high on the "nice" list this year!

This is quite a popular thread on the Sony forum that I run so hopefully it will be popular here too (thanks Brownie!).

Simply post any purchases or sales/trades of photo gear. This could be anything from a filter to a new computer purchased for editing. Software, accessories, and of course bodies and lenses!

I've been fairly good recently and have resisted my GAS urge. My last purchase was a pair of Vallerret Tinden Photography Gloves to keep my hands nice and toasty during our colder snaps. They definitely did the trick although they are a little bulky which I found made it difficult to get a good grip on my R5 with the 100-500 attached as there is very little room between the lens and grip. Hopefully heading into April I won't be needing them for a while now!

First an Snipiz Lens Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, then a Neweer 77" tripod, and also a Canon RF 16 mm lens. It's going to be a nice Christmas.

I purchased a Weyllan LH7 Leveling Base for my tripod. I had a leveling base that had a single screw knob with which to lock the base into position. It worked well, but I always felt like I was going to break the locking knob to get it tight enough. The Weyllan is much better and I can definitely recommend it. I have tested it with my adapted 70-200 f2.8II/gripped EOS R combination and it holds its position without any problem at all. It is easy to lock into position and to unlock. It is also easy to just partially unlock it leaving enough friction to prevent the rig from flopping over.

I ordered a roll of 1/16 inch red chartpack tape on Amazon. I hate that the tripod collar on the 200-800 is not indexed to click at horizontal or vertical marks and also the lines are so faint. Not sure how long the adhesive on the tape will hold but I've got a whole roll of it if I need to redo.

I recently picked up a Tilta full cage for the R5m2. At $55, it's about half the price of the SmallRig "Black Mamba" cage, and (for you studio shooters) comes with an aluminum USB and HDMI cable clamp that screws into the body. It's a very good fit, with one minor quibble: the cage passes between the dedicated movie-shooting button and the main dial, and people with large fingers may find it somewhat intrusive. That's not a dealbreaker for me.

My wife ordered me the Surui SVM Rapid System One step Height Adjustment Monopod for Christmas, but it didn't arrive until December 30th.

I shoot from my mobility scooter and tried an old monopod I have to help relieve the strain on my shoulders, arms, hands and back when taking photographs. It worked to a certain extent, but I had a couple of near misses when trying to fine tune the height of the monopod. The scariest occasion would have seen my camera hit the ground if not for my wife. She was at my side and she saved the day. I should have kept my camera strap in place and around my neck. I had the silly idea that the camera was safe on the monopod and detached the camera strap. Not a mistake I will make again.

The weather looks reasonable for the weekend so I'm looking to try the monopod out when we visit Rochester High Street, Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral, although I think the interior of the Cathedral would be best recorded from a tripod.

During on of the big box stores flash sales recently, I bought a pair of SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO CFexpress cards. They were on sale for nearly $100 off the normal price. I am planning to get into video more this year so I decided it would be a good idea to stock up on CFexpress cards for my Canon R5. I also bought a Rugard 6-card hard case for these cards. (I already had the case for my SD cards and really like it)

Do computers count? I had a 2020 13" MacBook Air M1, 16GB RAM. Last year I was really struggling with the screen size. My desktop is a 27" iMac. Last year when in Portugal I bought cheap 21" HD monitor to use as a monitor which was wasted venture. We left it there and I'm going to donate it to a charity when we go back next month.

I was not going to do it this year but yesterday I broke down and got a 2024 15" MacBook Air M3, 24GB RAM. I just could not stand the thought of another two months on that screen. What a difference the 15" screen makes. I also got a decent trade in for the M1 which was another motivator.

Also being the dummy I am, last year I calibrated my screens and made notes about how bright to set them. I accidentally copied my iMac brightness value to the MacBook and left the I1 Display Pro at home. You always tap that brightness button by mistake. I'm pretty sure I had the screen too dark last year. Not critical for web posting but I try to keep it calibrated anyway. That won't happen this year.

Adobe Denoise AI took 85 seconds on the M1 and I'm getting 45 on the M3. When Adobe had the Neural engine running for a while the M1 was clocking out at 23 seconds. They turned it off and hopefully they can resolve the issues. 45 isn't too bad. So I'm a little more excited to get out there now. 3 more weeks.

Just to add I actually bought that 13" MacBook in Portugal because the previous one died. I got it back to the condo and tried to use it. It was doing weird things and I was about to take it back. Then I realized it has a European keyboard so about 7-8 keys were different from North America. How dare Apple sell me a European keyboard for something I bought in Europe. :) I had to tape my own icons to the keys. When I got back the local Apple store swapped them for me for free.

I guess I'm not getting any younger because that 13' screen didn't bother me 4 years ago. When you are over the hump things sure change fast.

I sure hope they changed the keyboard layout in software as well!

If you ever want to switch it back to European: System Settings / Keyboard / Input Source / select European. At this point you can switch back and forth using the Globe Icon in the menu bar. That way you can change it when you make another trip to the EU without having to visit an iStore.

I think I had done that before taking it in. It all seemed normal when using it there and when I got back home. It's been too many years to remember those details. Thanks for the tip!
