Who knew there as a small waterfall nestled in the trees along the river?

Dover Castle commands the Strait of Dover, a position of strategic importance throughout history.
Another stunning and enjoybable set of images to pique to the imagination and curiosity of my history-interested mind. It was fascinating to learn how this structure was adapted over time to meet contemporary challenges.

Double Crested cormorant enjoying lunch in the local storm water run-off pond. Our city does not stock these ponds so it is a goldfish or Prussian carp that people have released into the water. But it does give me something to shoot.

I'm not sure what happened here... Either it was a crash landing, or if someone buzzed the tower without permission.

Images from a brief mid-journey stop-off at Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire, Wales. (Ongoing essential repair and conservation work is creating a slight case of over-scaffolding blight - though this is preferable to having bits of it fall on your head and will hopefully allow it to be enjoyed by future visitors).

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL E/ ViewPoint, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio. Compilations feature Karen - R7 and Phil - R5 II).

You can find out more about Tintern Abbey by clicking Here.

Phil and Karen

1. Tintern Abbey (Welsh: Abaty Tyndyrn) sits on the Welsh bank of the River Wye and was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales - and the second in Britain (after Waverley Abbey).

2. Initially, a simple stone church and cloisters were built (of which little remains).

3. In 1269 work on a new abbey church began and this grew into one of the masterpieces of British Gothic architecture. Roger Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk, the then lord of Chepstow, was a generous benefactor in rebuilding the church.

4. In 1536 Tintern surrendered during the first round of the dissolution of the monasteries * and the once majestic abbey began slowly to turn into a ruin. (* Between 1536 and 1541, King Henry VIII disbanded over 800 Catholic monasteries, abbeys, and friaries in England, Wales, and Ireland).

5. Since 1984 the site has been managed by CADW, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, and is visited by 70,000 people each year (70,002 including us - Phil captured bottom right). (Currently, there's a 10% discount on admission prices due to the ongoing disruptions).

6. As part of the celebrations to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, a fresh faced Phil Moore clambered up the muddy slopes of the River Wye at Tintern Abbey having successfully completed The 100-mile Canoe Test.
