  1. Yes
If I need printing of any sort go to a printing shop.

But occasionally you see change of model run out prices on professional printers 40% off etc.

Guess if you owned one you may use ut

Printers are "cheap" when you compare it to the cost of Ink.

Say, for example image PROGRAF PRO-1000 is on sale for $999.99 and ink is only $699.99 (full set of inks: MBK, PBK, C, M, Y, PM, PC, R, B, GY, PGY, CO)
But you are limited to 17" x 22" (enlargement limit)

Compared to what I use: 🤣

HP QfficeJet pro 8600 I've had since 2011 and have printed 22,108 pages. Ink about $135.00 (XL Bk, Y, C, M)

I have an older Canon Pixma Pro-100 that I got on sale years ago. I very rarely print on it. I like its output, but for me it wasn't worth it. Like Dean advised, price paper and ink. I reckon it comes down to volume and turn-around time needs.

I wish I had a printing shop locally, other than Wallmart, FedEx, etc. Recently, I ordered a print on acrylic from SmugMug and was satisfied, but it was expensive. So, online may be an option too.

Camera club I’m involved in they bought a printer between members. They meet often like 5 times a month if they need a print the printer comes along interesting way to do it

Yes; two.
  • The ‘everyday printer’ is a typical home office printer-scanner-copier.
  • The ‘photo printer’ is used for A4 printing.
Dare I add — I probably shouldn’t! — that sending an image to a print service seems like an utterly joyless conclusion to the post-processing experience.

I take thousands of photos; I print dozens of them. It’s fun. I never agonise over whether an image is a so-called ‘wall-hanger’: I just print it (and there have been no regrets).

Owning a printer is a bad idea, but I did anyway. You must print occasionally, or the ink will dry in the printer head. Then, you will learn how to soak and clean your print head. Then again, it's fun to print your photos.

I inflict calendars on friends and family every year. It was getting fairly spendy @ $30 a copy through Mimeo so last year, I did a test run at Walmart. The very first photo was printed upside down (and no, it was an easily identifiable TREE not some artsy-fartsy thing where you don’t know which way is up). Every single photo was way too dark. I went back, all set to tear someone a new one. When I finally got someone in the photo department, it was an overworked, overtired, underpaid woman who said she was probably the one who did it. I kind of lost the urge to take it out on her. She explained the overly complex method to get a refund, but since it was only like, $12, I wrote it off to “lessons learned” and left.

I have a Prograf 300. I print a nozzle check on plain paper once a week or so, if I’m not printing “for real”.

There’s a photo lab on the campus where I work, that I was considering a membership in, before I bought my printer, but since I’m an antisocial **** ( word meaning short, sudden movement) and since they didn’t see fit to answer my emailed questions, I bought the printer instead. I finally went over there today. I left feeling glad I bought the printer instead.

Well to continue this discussion been studying things.

And taken on all comments.

Canon pro300 $950 Epson 700 $990 seem logical choices or Epson 8850. $1200

Few others suggested above are ok until ,one you either get addicted to it or two you actually start selling a few prints and three you find you need larger prints .

Then you got to next level sort of double the cost.

Another thing to consider seems to be time between uses like if used once a month can cause issues on some printers.

Seems some issues with latest canon 1100 printer with banding which canon have replicated.

Last comment common thread and I may be wrong here but seems most buy from dedicated dealers with warranty or care package. One chap I read on a forum had 3 Epson printers in a month his third one going strong 2 years down the track.

But I’m old fashioned I buy camera gear from one shop and one shop only and I get a corporate discount maybe I should….. canon rp canon r6 r6ii 15/35 24/70 70/200 L and 100/400 3 tripods various filters sd cards

How did it happen was a deal on r6 I was in hospital getting hip replaced missed cut off deal for discount errr pardon the pun. Anyway explained situation canon wouldn’t budge about 4 days late hmmm how can we do this camera store said ahhhh corporate discount sure enough got the discounted price and stayed with them ever since. Sometimes negligible sometimes good discount and always forewarned of discounts and or increases in prices before general public by a week. Yup only guy on planer who doesn’t buy from grey imported market.

And oddly to add camera store actually has canon printer mentioned at almost cheapest price only about $40 above online will ring them on Monday. Enjoy you day lads lasses and convertibles a balmy 42c here

Phew getting hot here indoors for the afternoon

Can’t think of a better term but is there a Synergy or compatibility between canon cameras and canon fine art printers just thinking out loud?

Ohhh, must be an Ivy League college with all the fancy stuff....like TSR-80's computers as well.
Poison Ivy League, maybe.

I have the Pro 300. I print every few weeks or so, primarily 8x10 (whatever "A" size that is....). I have done a few A3+ prints as well. I am on my third set of ink cartridges this year - which includes the "starter" ones that come with about six ink molecules. ) If I am not printing anything, and I remember, I print a nozzle check on plain paper to keep the heads clean. So far, so good. My only beef is that, if I want to be responsible and send the empty cartridges back I have to do it on my own dime. There is no one around here that is part of Canon's recycling program.

I can print 13"x19" borderless (that's 33x48 in Commie Units). It doesn't have a roll feed, but you can print longer than 19/48, but I'm not sure what the limit is. (Haven't tried it yet). I have access to the huge roll-feed printers the university has, so if I get the urge to print ginormous, I can use those.
Then you got to next level sort of double the cost.
Not just the printer and ink, but bigger paper costs more too. I realized this yesterday, when I tried a print on Baryta paper from a Hannemühle sampler pack I bought....and I liked it a lot. "Damn...of course I like the more expensive paper more..."

I don't buy grey/gray market either, but I feel no guilt buying online, since the two brick and mortar camera shops near me are pretty much crap. (One misplaced my wife's camera order and was completely unapologetic and the other is basically a corner of an appliance store where I swear some of the merchandise is the same stock they had when I was going in there back in my film days...)

As far as printers go this guy has probably forgotten more about printers than I will ever know.

And another resource is the paper gods at Fotospeed. Their free ebook has a lot of useful info.

What is your price for the Canon PRO-1000? I see it for $200USD more than the PRO-300 and think that would be worth having the newer - though not latest - model.

BTW, it just started snowing here.

Bit late to the show - sorry. I use a pro printing company for all my work stuff BUT I do occasionally print 6x4, 5x7, and A4 photo's for home or for friends, I have an old 'Canon PIXMA iP4600 - Printer' which has never let me down, prints outstanding photo's on gloss and matt paper. Old is good (at least that's what I tell myself every morning ;-) )

Pro 1000 is $2100

I watched a couple of vids on the site guru's link. Good info and perspective, imo. One point he made, that I agree with, is that A4 paper size is transition point. ~12" width seems a lot, but it is a limitation on photo prints that are intended to hang on a wall. Consider that. The print that I bought for my niece was 16x24 inches.

This thread is a good topic of conversation. I've bought prints of a couple of my photos recently, but mostly they are shared online which has less of a visceral impact. There is a difference between walking by an image and clicking by an image.

I know all can be done online send it to print shop get it back by post.
I’m semi remote my nearest “good” print shop is 75kms

Local computer store offered different slant on things.
Epson v Canon. If something goes wrong with Epson they are “accredited” repairers allowed to fix on site and issues with canon has to be sent to canon.
Apparently happened about two years ago in Oz.
Think figure he quoted was they have over a 1000 canon printers/customers on there books can fix any of them. They reccomend Epson not reason they want business more time issues yeah bring it in we will have it repaired in 3 or 4 days meantime canon would haven’t even looked at it yet.

So food for thought

Got the Epson ET-2850, not a dedicated photo printer, but the results are good enough for my own use, and the ink lasts a really long time.

Wow

For my personal photography printing, I have a Canon G650. I occaisionally have images printed larger than A4 to be displayed on the wall, and then I use one of our print services here in Germany, depending on the image and what paper/mounting I wish to have.

Most of my A4 or smaller prints are displayed in our office on a magnetic whiteboard. If I have an image I wish to display, I print it and post it on the whiteboard.
