having trouble working out how to delete photos from collection but will figure it out.

Have the the photo's in the LIBRARY (so they display as thumbnails across the bottom) and press "X" when you click on the thumbnail of the image you want to get rid of.

Once you have done this for all the images, hold CTRL and press DELETE to get the prompt to actually remove them to your recycle bin. (I choose to delete them permanently).

You need to check to see where the photo is, if it is in a collection then it can't be deleted, so you have to get to the root directory. The easiest way to do that is to right-click on the photo and pick the dropdown that says "go to folder in library" then when you are there you will be able to either hit the delete key and choose to "delete from disk" or "remove from Lightroom" If you choose to remove from Lightroom, whenever you synchronize that folder it will reappear. If you don't like a photo I usually use "delete from disk" which, like Paul said, puts it in your trash. When you are in that root folder on Lightroom, like Paul said, you can just put x on all the photos you want to delete then press ctrl/cmd and back, and you will be given those choices again.

Your original post indicated you want to remove photos from a "collection". The above tells you how to remove photos. If it is removal from a collection you want to accomplish just select the images and hit delete, or click on the little circle in the upper right of the image. This will remove it from the collection but not from the catalogue or hard drive. Hope this helps.
