We are going on vacation and want to travel as light as possible. I have an R6 mkii. My lenses are 24-105 f4 and 28-70 f2.8. I love the 28-70 because it’s light and sharp but will probably miss the zoom on vacation. (I never shoot wildlife). If I take the 24-105 f4, I will want something small and lightweight for indoors. Was considering the 24mm 1.8 or 35 mm 1.8. I’d love any comments or thoughts you might have.

Here is my very first shot with my RF 24mm f/1.8. I have shot a few night shots as well, but usually shoot at f/2.8.
I still have a habit of grabbing my RF 15-35mm f/2.8 when shooting these focal ranges, but it is a bit heavier.

Hi Roxanne,

We have the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro (a fine lens we really should use more often). Not sure of your budget, but for 'something small and lightweight for indoors' perhaps also consider the (relatively) cheap RF 16mm f/2.8, or (relatively) expensive RF 14-35mm f/4L IS. Both are fun and useful for indoor/ travel scenarios.

Ditto the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM (picked mine up used for about 345USD). Probably the travel lens I take out most at night. Sometimes the 16mm, but the 35 is a nicer balance.

Where are you going on vacation? And why type of photography do you do most? Going to see the Grand Canyon, is a bit different than going to a big metro city and seeing museums and landmarks, etc...

All reports are that the 28-70mm f/2.8 is a great lens and should be a great walking around lens for those that don't want to carry a back pack full of lenses and spare cameras. The 24-105mm f/4 is also a great lens with a bit more reach, but at the price of low light capability for indoor work. So I think it comes down to whether you will be doing mostly indoor photography or outdoor photography. I don't think you can go wrong with either. But I also don't think the extra zoom on the 105mm is worth that much. If I'm zooming in I usually want my 70-200, or a 100-500. So I'd rather have the better glass of the 24-70mm f/2.8. I'm also willing to carry a backpack full of gear with me.

If you are going to go see wide open outdoors spaces, I would bring along a 16mm f/2.8 also. (My 24-70mm f/2.8 wasn't quite wide enough for me at the Grand Canyon, so I switched to my 16mm). Nothing captures landscapes like a wide prime. If you'll be doing indoor stuff, dinners and parties with friends, the 35mm f/1.8 is a great choice for a secondary lens.

So, after writing all that out, my suggestion is to take the 28-70mm f/2.8 and get the 16mm STM for outdoors/landscapes or the 35mm STM for indoor or night work.

And don't forget the extra batteries!
