I have a question about calibration. With my canon DSLR I used to calibrate my lenses. Has anyone calibrated RF lenses? I use FoCal software. Reason I ask is b/c I got an RF 1.4 extender for my RF 100-500mm and so far it's not giving me sharp images - I feel like it needs to be calibrated but I haven't seen any discussion on calibrating RF lenses.

Lens calibration isn't necessary with mirrorless systems as the focusing and imaging happen in the same place, on the image senor itself. With a DSLR adjustments/corrections are required to compensate for the differences between the focusing light path and the imaging light path.

There will always be a little change in image quality with an extender, but in my tests with the same combination (and with a 2x extender too all on hire) I found that the images looked pretty good to me, but that's a subjective view of course.

If you have a calibration target, or some other static subject with clear high contrast, try some test shots using on a tripod with remote or timer release to avoid any camera shake. If you still cannot get a clearly sharp focused image with the extender, but you do without the extender in the same scenario, then perhaps you have an issue with the extender - see if you can try with another example of the extender.

THIS. I am so tired of lens calibration from over the years, so hit and miss depending upon camera model and methods used. I was never looking for a tiny camera (first mirrorless so called strength as I have large hands and loved the 5D series size) So not calibrating glass is one of my personal top reasons for moving to the R series.

I use the RF 1.4ex with my RF 100-500 on the r5 and it's sharp as heck. Here is a photo I shot when i first got it of my neighbors house across the street.
This at 500mm x 1.4ex in 1.6x crop mode. 1120mm equivalent. 1/2000 @ F10
