Canon R5 Canon R5 Firmware Update v1.8.1

Welcome to our Canon RF Shooters Forum

Hi Roger,

Look forward to hearing what you think about the changes (I've downloaded it but not had chance to install it yet). Thanks for the tips about the Manual and DPP too!

Phil

For the the features I want this major upgrade is pretty lacking. The new 400MP mode seems to be the major feature change. I will take some time to evaluate that. I hoping for more choice in FPS for ES and I was hoping for no 30minute timer. No mention of either of those in manual.

I had to take off my third party grip to get the firmware upgrade to load properly. I have run into that before but it was a little time I was worried when wasn't loading that remembered my grip must be off for firmware updates.

I'm still deliberating whether to install this one immediately (I may wait a while to check there's no bug reports).

I'm also presuming my pet wish (Zebras for stills) is still being worked on by the Canon Tech Team?...

All I can see that is different is the high res bit?

Although the long wait before it starts the update is a bit unnerving. I can't remember there being that sort of delay when updating my EOS 7D2 or 5D3?
Same with the R6 a very long pause before the update starts.

Interestingly when I have tried to update the R5 with a previous version of firmware on the card it failed. This time it didn't and showed not only the new firmware but the previous firmware on the card like the R6 has always done before? I use EOS Utility to download the firmware to the card, just make life easy for me.

Hi Phil,

I always update via the SD card procedure (following the instructions to the letter - honestly Canon!).

I particularly relish the lifetime of growing anxiety waiting for the progress bar to begin updating... :D

I haven't updated yet this time, but I gather the high res (jpg only) function is the major addition.

Phil

Was there a FW 1.8 that I missed? Why 1.8.1?
Nope. Last Firmware update was 1.7. Assuming that it's 1.8.1 because Canon found a "fix" before it was released. Hence 1.8.1. Update not on Canon Canon site yet, but I downloaded from US site and seems to be working fine so far. Still need to test in field, but seems to work fine on a few quick indoor shots.

Hum...Advance User Guide is accurate ("... assume...firmware version 1.8.0 or later.), Digital Photo Professional is accurate (4.17.20), but software link leads to 1.7.0 NOT 1.8.1.

West Coast, USA....perhaps I need to wait a little longer?

I have downloaded the firmware files to my Mac Book Pro as usual, but it will not copy to the camera on formatted SD cards (I have tried two) several times). Nor will it copy over the USB connection via EOS Utility (I downloaded the latest updated version beforehand). Nothing seems to work to install on the camera. I missed 1.7.0, so tried doing that first as well - no luck. I am stumped.

Hi Don,

Sorry to hear you're having issues. Have you put the 'EOSR181.FIR' file in the root directory of the SD card? (i.e. Not In a folder).

I had to update EOS Utility before it recognised my cameras.
Didn’t try writing directly to the SD card though.

I think this is meant for me (Ian) - I have been unable to identify for certain which is the root directory on the SD cards, so I have put a copy in every section that will accept it! This is what I had to do last time I updated the firmware (which was otherwise fine. I have updated everything connected with the process to no avail. I even copied the whole content of my normal 256GB card to allow me to then format it and start with a clean slate!

Yes I had to do the same before it recognised my camera too. Even once the updated software recognised the R5 it would not transfer the FIR file. The thing that I don't get is the message I get on the camera that a firmware file older than 1.6.0 is on the SD card which must be deleted before updating - there can be no such file as I have formatted to card (twice now)! Something I did notice on the Canon site was that the latest Ventura Mac OS tranche is not listed there as an option - I wonder if that is an issue here? I had no problem downloading the files but maybe they are corrupted if Canon's OS list is out-of-date? Edit - it occurs to me that it may take a considerable time to update the camera firmware - how long would people assume? The trouble is I see a box text that tells me "upating firmware" but with no timer and with a 'live' option to click next, which shows me "Failed to Transfer Files". Am I jumping the gun on the file transfer to the camera? I'm just not used to seeing the next stage of a process being clickable before the current one has finished.

Root Directory Location.
In this example my SD card is listed as my F drive. Yours could be the same or different, but the concept is the same: Nothing after EOS_DIGITAL (F: > in the Address Bar and you are in your Root Directory.

Yeah, not available yet in Canada either, but some recommended downloading from the UK site and it worked! What can I say, I'm impatient. Only problem so far, I now have a craving for fish and chips (and warm beer). 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Many thanks - I suspect this may be in Windows - I'm on a Mac Book Pro where the file directory is not shown in that detail/format. In any case, I believe I have copied to the root and everywhere else! Thanks again.

Hi Ian, in macOS it should look like this (root = not in a folder) -

I did some samples here comparing with a 85mm 1.2 DS. Does have some funky artifacts if you crop in a ton and there is a color shift:

Super cropped in:

You are going to have to update your signature line with Firmware 1.8.1. (See Advanced User Guide page 294)

Hi Dean,

Oh my. Crikey. I am completely and utterly stunned… o_O

First job tomorrow then.

Thing is, what am I going to do for a signature strap line now?

:D
