I've had RF body only for few months now, and I still haven't figured out anything useful to be used with the control ring.

I'm curious, what people are using it for?

Nothing at all! I was recommended to get the control ring adapter...I haven't got any RF lenses... but as far as I'm concerned it's an unneeded extra expense. I have the three dials set for S/S, Aperture and ISO so that's me happy. There is no way I can hand hold the camera with a large lens and use the control ring, perhaps if it was tripod mounted it might be useful though. There is always the danger that you change whatever it's set to change by accidentally moving it when you are carrying the camera too.

I have it set to exposure compensation since I can control the other three with the other dials on the body. The exposure compensation gets used if I flip the ISO to auto in certain shooting situations.

Yes it can be inadvertently adjusted but is handy to have. I find I'm forgetful sometimes of checking my settings anyways before shooting ;)

Yea I was considering EC but rejected the idea for exactly that reason. Especially shooting sports or events, often you don't have time to check the settings or even chimp the pictures.

I'm wondering if there's some item that would be either obvious change, and/or something that doesn't really matter too much if it's incorrect.

The front button on R5 I've configured to switch between eye-AF on/off, and that's quite handy.

I also have it set to exposure compensation. Can't say it gets much use but I enjoy having it as an option. I have yet to accidentally turn it so I'm thinking it'll live there for a while.

I can't even really reach the front button so I pretend it's not there. Am I the only one with this issue?

I presume you are talking about the control ring and buttons on an RF lens? I have to agree that I have never used the buttons on my telephoto lenses either. They are hidden under lens coats and even its they weren't by the time I found then it would be too late anyway! The control ring in the EF-EOSR adapter is right up against the camera body so with a short lens it's easy to use no doubt.

I mean the button on the front of the camera body between the lens and hand grip. My finger can’t reach it unless I adjust my palm fwrd. So I’ve deemed it useless for my apparent smaller hands haha

I have the RF 15-35mm and 70-200mm lenses and don't use the control rings for anything.

Yes that's the button I was talking about too.

And now you mention, I tried few different hand angles on the grip and yes it's just about reachable for me. If my hands were even slightly smaller, I wouldn't be able to reach it without changing the grip.

On my R, I used it to change my aperture, like on an old manual lens. Since I've gotten the R5, I haven't set up anything. Thanks for this thread. It will give me some ideas.

I shoot in FV mode and use the control ring for shutter speed adjustments, I select an appropriate aperture given my current shooting and tend to leave ISO in Auto. I shoot mostly wildlife, so having a quick shutter adjustment allows me to make quick changes for things like birds in flight vs more static images and with Auto ISO, that will adjust to keep everything in the ball park.

Concerning the control ring adapter for the R series camera. I know this allows one to use EF lenses on these cameras. My question is, does this change the full frame sensor to a crop sensor when using EF lenses? I've read where it would change the 45MP full frame sensor to a 17MP resolution crop censor setting.

The adapter, when used with an EF lens, will still produce a full frame image. The adapter also allows you to use EF-S lenses (a crop frame lens), when used with an EF-S lens, you will end up with a crop image on your sensor.

Thanks!

Exposure compensation is handy especially with long range zoom lenses. Exposure can vary depending on composition and framing

Thanks for bringing this up. I've been wondering about the value of the control ring on the adapter. Exposure comp seems to be the one thing I might want it for.

Exposure compensation isn't available if you use "M" unless you also use auto-iso so no use to me unfortunately.

I did consider that function @Kevin.sim but for the reasons of accidentally changing it I decided I wouldn't need it that often anyway.
I know with the R, the control ring on the lenses can be set to only be used if the shutter button is half-pressed. That should eliminate most accidental usage.....right???
Disclaimer - I'm not sure if the control ring on the adapter can be set that way as well.

I'll investigate, thanks . However, still can't think of a use for it yet!

I would love to use it more (it's on my EF lenses adapter) and thought, like most of you folk, that of set it to ISO or exposure comp. The trouble is, 99% of the times I use long lenses (70-200L or 100-400L) so can't get my fingers back there and hold the lens up at the same time! 😬

I use it for ISO on the R, right now it is set for exposure comp on the R5, but I'm not sure how often I will really use it.

I've tried the auto ISO while in manual but the control ring does nothing while set to adjust the exposure compensation. When I switch to P mode the ring works fine. I'm new to the R5, am I missing something concerning the control ring use in manual? I'm using EF lenses.

You need to check your settings again perhaps. Mine works both with using the adapter and Rf lens.
Maybe you are not either using auto ISO or haven't switched the use of the control ring. The latter not likely as it works in P ( and should in other modes too without auto iso) I'd check you have set auto-iso I think. Hope you work it out!

Yep, thought I was in auto ISO but was not while in manual mode. Thanks!

I use the control ring to adjust ISO. The wheel on the body's back is used for EV compensation.
