File Naming R cameras

I agree with all of the tips above, especially with the Canon app being something that I really do not like. I even bought a mid-priced Samsung phone hoping that the gps experience with the app would be better as I thought my phone was the problem. It was the app.

I bought a Solmeta GMAX2 for my EOS R and absolutely recommend it 100%. Yeah, I have to remember to put it on the hot shoe and turn it on, but if I do that, it works wonderfully. Thankfully when walking around using my ThinkTank shoulder bag, it will hold my camera with the gps attached without a problem.

Good point. It can connect via a cable with older DSLRs, but it appears our R cameras don't have a data port that the cable can attach to.

Can someone run through simple set up of canon app ive given up to be honest
I also had trouble getting it connected as it wasn't, to me, very intuitive. I had the best luck by using the provided connection guide in the app itself. Good luck on finding a good solution.

If those triggers don't have to be mounted to the hotshoe, maybe one could be mounted off camera and that camera could be used for a shoe-mount gps device. Otherwise, I think the best option would be to work out the problems with connecting your smartphone with the Canon app, or to use a gps logging app and add location coordinates after the shoot.

Of course, the best scenario would be if Canon put gps in every body. I can't think of a reason they don't except that they figure that most people would prefer to use their smartphone for gps via their app.

On a side note, I just tried the latest version of the Canon android app, and it connected immediately with my phone. In the past, I always had to fight with it and call it various names before somehow it would connect. But, I still prefer my Solmeta as I don't have to use phone battery to transmit location info to my camera.
