Gear Insurance?

What are you guys using for gear insurance?

I’m not a professional photographer, but I have a pretty decent inventory of camera gear that I would like to protect.

I keep seeing various adds on Facebook for gear insurance, but I’m pretty sure most of those are some sort of scam and won’t pay out if you actually need it.

What’s good and reliable and a decent price?

Insurance doesn't protect your gear. It protects your bank account afterwards if the gear is lost. You still suffer the loss and its consequences if you lose the assets.

For me, the purpose of insurance is to cover me financially if it would be hard for me to cover the loss myself. I need car insurance and house insurance because a claim might wipe me out financially (plus car insurance is mandated).

I don't have insurance on my photography gear. If I lost it, it would be distressing, but I could replace it myself.

When you buy an item, an extended warranty is often offered. Those are very profitable for the merchant - which is why they push those plans. It is insurance too. Basically you pay whether you need the service or not.

It's worthwhile to consider your risks. If you think you are at high risk, then insurance might be worth it. If you are low risk, then on average you are supporting all the other customers in the plan.

If you do get insurance on personal property, the best way usually is to get a rider on your existing home insurance policy.

I have most of my gear covered by State Farm. It covers all loss, whether it be theft or accidental (including self-inflicted stupidity - which is my primary concern ).

Same here, regardless of what happens State Farm replaces it at current market value.
