Lightroom Classic v14.2 - mainly 'performance improvements', 'bug fixes' and new lens support, though Adaptive Profiles (raw files), Focus Point Selection (when tethering) and Catalogue Back-up management options (via Preferences) are new features.

Anthony Morganti goes through the changes on YouTube - click Here.

(Camera Raw has also been updated to v17.2).

Cool. I've been waiting for that. I figured Adobe might wait until the mid year releases in April but they do update year round.

So any thoughts about the new Adaptive Profile? I find most of the files aren’t too bad. Some are way off. I think I’ll set it up as my new import preset and use my old preset as a back up. See where that goes.

Hi Only RF,

No, not yet - I had a very quick dabble with it in Photoshop when it was only available there, but I haven't had an opportunity to look at it in LrC yet as I'm operating a high-speed LrC->DxO->LrC conveyor belt of zoo shots in which DxO is applying the camera rendering.

Once time permits I'm intending to do some comparative edits using my usual workflow vs Adobe Adaptive Profile.

(I do the same periodically with NR).

Unscientific Test #1: R7 raw (shot by Karen) - LrC Adaptive Profile + Adobe NR and tweaks to my taste vs DxO (profile/ NR) + LrC tweaks to my taste.

Make of them what you will. (Note this is a screen capture so the usual resolution limitations apply).

[I use - and really like Adobe, DxO and Topaz software - so have no axe to grind, or point to prove!].

My personal opinion - either option is perfectly fine, but I prefer the DxO/ LrC combo (which I would normally 'polish off' using PS/ TK-9 + Topaz PAI).

We don't grind axes here. We just discuss things and each to their own. :)

I tried doing a batch import of the new Adaptive Color via a preset I created. I read about an "update" button under the profile indicator and a red dot in front of Basic at the Lightroom Queen's site. I gave it a try and LrC did not apply Adaptive Color but I did get the warnings.

John Ellis replied.

In Library, select all the newly imported photos and do the menu command Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. If a selected photo doesn't have settings that need updating, LR will quickly skip over it.

I gave this a try and it seems to have worked.

In the Develop page I selected all the photos, switched Sync to Auto Sync and pressed the Update button. Seems to have worked.

I'm going to give it a try next time I head out.

Hi Only RF,

Interesting. I'm wondering if this technique could assist with our huge zoo raw file imports, where it's sometimes difficult to discern the best shot from a bunch without at least some (occasionally a lot) of tweaking? We're off on another trip soon and I will aim to try this technique out when we return... :)

If so this could really benefit the weeding/ selection aspect of my workflow.

(I may have a memory card with some suitable raw files from the last zoo trip still on it and, if so, I may get a chance to look at this before we go).

I was trying to find an easy way to compare my usual Import preset to Adaptive Color. Creating virtual copies one at a time is a real pain. I've come up with a procedure. I think it's working properly. Feel free to make any suggestions.

This is all done in the Develop Page

1. Edit - Select All Photos

2. Right click on any file and select Create Virtual Copies. Only Virtual Copies will be highlighted.

3. On top bar Select Photo - Set Flag - Flagged

4. Switch Sync to Auto Sync

5. Click on your desired Preset or Profile

Now you can select view any files and compare your preset or profile. If you like Adaptive Color better then make that change to the original RAW file. You may have to press Reset first.

When done

1. Select Edit - Select Flagged Photos

2. Right click on any file that is a copy

3. Remove Photos - Remove from Lightroom

Oh yes. Test this first on a dozen or so files you don't need! I did a few random snaps around the house and imported.

It works the other way around as well. Import with your typical preset or profile and make virtual copies for Adaptive Color.

I made a few changes to line 5 and added 6 & 7. If someone wishes to import using their own preset or Color profile that has adjustments then you need to reset. Adpative Color should be applied with no adjustments.

This is all done in the Develop Page

1. Edit- Select All

2. Right click on any file and select Create Virtual Copies. Only Virtual Copies will be highlighted.

3. On top bar select - Photo - Set Flag - Flagged

4. Switch Sync to Auto Sync

5. If you imported using Adaptive Color ignore step 6 and go to step 7

6. If you imported using a Custom Preset or Color Profile that has adjustments - Press Reset.

7. Click on your desired Preset or Profile

Now you can select and view any files and compare your preset or profile. If you like Adaptive Color better then make that change to the original RAW file. You may have to press Reset first.

When done

1. Edit - Select Flagged Photos

2. Right click on any file that is a copy

3. Remove Photos - Remove from Lightroom.

Hi Only RF,

The phrase 'you never stop learning about things in Lightroom Classic' springs to mind!

I'd not come across 'Auto Sync' before, but having just tried a semi-random button pressing version of your (original) workflow on a bunch of raw files in an as yet unweeded folder of zoo shots, it has got me thinking. I need to more fully assess whether selectively using this feature in combination with the Adaptive Colour profile may be quicker than what I currently do with any instances of 'difficult to assess' raw files, but on the face of it, it all looks quite promising.

Thanks for the tip/ lead - if I can harness the potential, this could be time saving/ useful... :)

It remains to be seen whether the Adaptive Colour profile is the best start point for all of our files (clearly this is something you're currently assessing too).

I used Auto Sync when Auto was first introduced and before I created a preset for it. It's a handy feature.
