Macro - Close up Lenses VS Extension Tubes

Would anyone like to share their experience or thoughts about using close-up lens attachments and extension tubes?
What is the difference? Pros and cons of both? Combinations?

They effectively are trying to do the same thing, which is allow you to get more magnification. The difference is close up lens attachments are adding additional glass elements and often times they are not nearly as good quality. There are a few that are good, but in general, they cause additional distortion, fringing, etc. Extension tubes don’t add any additional glass elements into the mix. I am not entirely sure of the drawbacks, which I am sure there are, but they are good cheaper alternatives to getting more magnification.

I think the biggest drawback from either is effectively reducing your usable working distance; having to get even closer to the subject. Hope someone else will jump in to give a little more insight.
