Raw Burst Mode & Me

I'm trying to teach myself action snapping. Today I tried my first practice snapping my wife playing pickleball. Figuring I may as well use the Raw Burst Mode to see what I get. I did a few. I ended up with huge files named CR3 but PS won't open them.

So I tried DPP which is the second most opaque program I can name in this era anyway. DPP will open these files but I expected a film strip from each and some method of me being able to extract a frame to a single CR3 I can address in PS. Ha ha on my silliness for thinking this would go smoothly. My previous experiences with DPP had me swear off of it for good.

The 'Help' menu gives me the DPP version only - typical. Is there some way I can browse individual images within these enormous CR3 files and extract some I think are worth bothering with? Why has Canon labeled these CR3s when they are not? Just to annoy newbies to the Raw Burst concept?

In addition, DPP keeps telling me to d/l some sort of neural whatever which I've done several times now. I haven't a clue what neural whatevers do for photography or why DPP keeps demanding I do this.

Camera is a 6ii. Any suggestions or a pointer to a Raw Burst Mode process tutorial greatly appreciated.

Are you using an outdated version of PS? CR3 file format has been out since 2018.

You might look at Digital Negative Converter or update Photoshop.

I'm using a future version of PS as a beta tester. It has no problem opening CR3 files in general. It can't open the ones made with Raw Burst Mode only. It also has no issues with DNGs.

It seems that you are using a Canon R6 Mark II, and you may be using pre-shooting. Here is a page explaining how it works.

Thanks. I got it. The key is to open the raw burst image in DPP, Alt-B and then the on screen prompts lead the way. Here's my first try at action photos:

• Join to view EXIF data.

I’m not sure about your definition of huge is but I always cull my files using DPP - Quick Check mode. It shows the files as finished JPEGs so sharp and contrasty.

1. I open the folder using DPP right off the card itself and then File - Select All.

2. Select Quick Check and then Full Screen mode.

3. Scroll right or left and press X for any files you don’t want to keep.

4. When done exit out of Quick Check.

5. Select Edit - Rating - Select Rejected Images only.

6. Select File - move to trash.

That still won’t help you edit files in PS unless you convert to DNG as suggested.

I use Lightroom Classic but I always pre-cull using DPP

They are going to be raw/CR3 files until you export them as jpg's or tiff's or other file types. Export them!

Yes! The only way raw burst.CR3 files can be opened is with DPP and alt+B or from the Tools drop down menu>Start RAW burst image tool.

Well. Someone on another forum said that you could use 3rd party developers. As far a I knew it had to be DPP so I was skeptical. I never responded.

IMO, if ACR can't open these files, then nobody but Canon can.
