People Revolutionary War Reenactors

After a few year hiatus, there was a revolutionary war battle fought in the open space behind my house last Sunday. It's a fun time, I didn't get there for the first day, but was able to get there for the afternoon of the second day and watch the battle. All shots were done with my full spectrum infrared converted RP with a 720nm filter. The last photo was a salute for the victims of 9/11.

Great photos, and the IR sensor gives the images an "historic" look (at least to my eyes). I also think that the last photo is fantastic.

I recently have started doing some IR photography as well using a 720nm filter on my R5 24-70mm lens and unfortunately have struggled with getting the ‘colors’ right. I have a friend that has a IR modified camera and the photos coming out of camera are very similar to yours. Mine all seem to have a Red or Green tint to them and no matter how I adjust them I can’t seem to quite get effect that you have. Any suggestions?

BTW: I reversed the red and blue channels in LR as was suggested. I’ve also created a custom WB profile as was also suggested for my camera that allows much more flexibility when editing the the photos. Overall I can get close but always have a red or green tint.

Thank you so much! Let me ask a few questions about what you are doing.

Was your custom WB profile was created with the DNG profile creator? I went one step further in mine and use a linear profile to make the starting image pretty flat in lightroom. I know some people don't set a white point after that but I usually do - if I am using a 720 filter I choose a leaf or grass-something green. If I am using 550, 590 or 665 I will use something neutral gray or even a white cloud. That usually helps clean up some of the color bleed. I channel swap in photoshop (I didn't think you could do it in LR tbh) and then work with photoshop or Nik plugins from there to either turn it to mono or get a color look.

If you want, I could look at one of your images and see what is happening.

Hmmm. I like that first one, but I don't understand that green cast on the second. I usually don't see a green cast unless I use my 550 filter. I am a bit clueless there. Have you tried using Canon's DPP to set the white point and then saving it as a .TIF file and then bringing it into lightroom/photoshop? Sometimes being outside the Adobeverse works well for IR. If you do use DPP you don't need the DNG profile, just the straight raw image.
Another thing - I was just experimenting. If you run your channel swap more than once you get different results (strange but true) Let me show you: This was a down and dirty color edit that I don't usually do. I will be honest and say I liked the results I got using my DNG profile better but it shows you that you can change things slightly by doing additional colorswapping. Also, please note that this is with a 550 filter clip in filter not the 720 you have been using on your lens

And this is the final that I liked best (which isn't to say I really like it, it was just the best outcome), It was with the DNG profile one channel swap a hue/sat adjustment, levels, and then a luminosity mask to separate the sky and a selective color layer for that. All in all, that took me less than 5 minutes.
