Ok so got one of these, but always thought if added to a 100-500 it would give 1.4x across whole range, but appears only from 300 upwards. Is this correct or am i being a muppet.
 
It's correct. The 100-500 can't physically be zoomed below 300 with the 1.4x fitted.
 
If you use the RF1.4X TC on the RF 100-400mm lens it will be the equivalent of 140-560mm while losing 1 f-stop of brightness.
I have both the RF100-500mmL and the RF100-400mm and they are used with my R5 and R7 depending on the shoot. I find the 300-500mm restriction of the RF100-500mm annoying for action shooting so may use the RF100-400mm lens instead in those shooting situations.

Yeah, physical limitation. You can't even attach it unless the lens is zoomed to 300. Bummah, but the good news is that it's excellent.
