RF lenses

So I have been upgrading my lenses to RF. Recently I purchased the 100-500, and traded in my Tamron 18-300 for the RF 24-240. I was having a few focusing issues with the tamron. It was slow to focus, and sometimes would not. Over the weekend here in Ottawa Ontario Canada, we had a weather event called a Derecho .

After it went through we had a bit more excitement in our area. A guy left his truck idling for 30 minutes. It went boom. The firefighters were there quickly and put it out.

It gave me a chance to use the 24-240mm. All I can say while not an L lense it worked extremely well focus was quick and fairly accurate. I really liked the Tamron, but I am glad I switched. Right now the only lens I am not switching is my 10-20 Sigma art lens. Fun thing the little white sign to the right of the truck says Fire lane no parking or stopping.

Wow, that seemed like a bit of excitement and good that that truck wasn't left idling in a garage.
I have the RF 24-105 L lens, and I'm amazed at how quickly it focuses. It's so fast that I'm unsure the lens has focused and habitually tap the shutter a second time to confirm the focus.

Interesting about the Tamron. I have a Tamron 100-400 and noticed it was very slow to focus on my EOS R with both the Canon adapter and a third-party adapter. I got a 70-300 L to replace it and it focuses instantly. The Tamron focuses quickly on my Canon DSLR though. I'm wondering if Canon did something with the EF protocol on the R series cameras that slows down third-party lenses.

I got a 70-300 L to replace it and it focuses instantly. The Tamron focuses quickly on my Canon DSLR though. I'm wondering if Canon did something with the EF protocol on the R series cameras that slows down third-party lenses.

Also having huge slowdown and hard time locking with canon adapter and R7 with Tamron 18-400 with both firmwares up to date. Can't seam to find a solution. Not really usable for wildlife...

I can't comment on the 3d party glass, but I have the 14-35mm, 24-105mm, and 100-500mm L lenses, and the 24-240mm and 100-400mm non-L lenses, and while the L glass is incredibly sharp and fast focusing, the others are no slouches. When I'm home my 24-200mm lives on my R6 and is my grab-and-go "just in case" kit when I'm just out running errands and it's great. The 100-400mm and an R7 (or possibly R10) is an amazing kit for a wildlife photographer on a budget.

Plenty of great options no matter what your budget.

I'm planning to take a look at thr 100-400 next week. Don't do much distance work but could be a good lens to have in the bag with the R10.

Fully agree with Jake about the 24-240mm - excellent as a walkabout lens.
