Hi Steven,

An interesting set-up - and an intriguing composition/ cool colour tint which draws the viewer into the scene.

(You may wish to consider cropping a little tighter on the left side so that the near-most cover forms a nice swirly border).

Thank you for sharing... 🙂

Summer is in full swint in the SE area of Texas where I live. I led a few members of our photo club to a sunflower farm in Snook, Texas which is about a 2 hour drive from my home. 94 degrees F and very humid but we still had a fun time. We wanted to shoot towards and after sunset, the hardest part was finding the right spot as many we looked at had flowers that were spent or facing away from us. Finally had to off road on an old ditch to find a good spot. We brought step ladders as the sunflowers get so tall. I got some decent shots and also captured images of my fellow club members.

I had 3 lenses in my bag, the 14-35, 14-105 and the 70-200. Probably shot more with the latter two than the ultra wide. 2026-028-044 KWPC sunflowers.jpg

1. William de Warenne received the Manor of Wakefield from King Henry I in about 1106 and it is believed Sandal Castle was first built in the early 1100’s, with the original earthwork motte and bailey castle completed by about 1130.

2. The castle's rebuilding in stone started at the end of the 1100s, with material supplies referenced in 1270 and 1275.

3. The castle was attacked and captured by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, for a short period in the early 1300s. After this, the Castle continued to develop under the de Warennes until 1361. From 1361 the castle was in the hands of royal owners.

4. Sandal Castle was involved in the Wars of the Roses (a dynastic war between the houses of Lancaster and York). The Battle of Wakefield took place here on 30 December 1460. Richard, Duke of York was fatally wounded in the battle. The Battle was fought on Wakefield Green, below the castle. Sandal Castle itself suffered no damage.

5. In 1484-85 King Richard III ordered additional building works at Sandal Castle, with the aim of making it a suitable base for a permanent household. Richard III was defeated at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. This brought to an end any further developments at Sandal Castle and it gradually fell into decay and by 1600 it was completely unoccupied.

6. Since 1954 the ruins of Sandal Castle have been owned and managed by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.
