Still playing catch-up a little bit, so images from our (not particularly recent - but next on the list) visit to Patterdale in the Lake District, Cumbria, England.

[Note: Photography is not permitted inside Dalemain Mansion itself - but the guided tour is interesting and fun. Patterdale Hall is not open to the public].

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite/ ViewPoint/ Nik Collection, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio 2. Compilations feature: R7 - Karen and R5 - Phil).

You can find out more about Dalemain Mansion by clicking Here.

1. There is evidence of a settlement at Dalemain in Saxon times and a Pele tower was built on the site during the reign of King Henry II. The old hall itself dates back to the 12th century.

RF-S-LD-01.jpg

2. In 1679, Sir Edward Hasell purchased Dalemain and it has remained in the family since. The Georgian front, built to enclose the old house within a central courtyard, was completed by his son in 1744 and the garden façade rebuilt in 1748 to match the new front. Founded in 2005, the annual 'World's Original Marmalade Awards and Festival' is held at Dalemain. (Delicious, locally crafted marmalades can be purchased from the on-site shop at eye-watering prices).

RF-S-LD-02.jpg

3. Meanwhile, Patterdale Hall dates back to 1624, when the Lordship of Patterdale was purchased from the Threlkeld Family by Joan Mounsey of Greystoke for her son John. Later, in 1848, William Marshall commissioned a much grander house which replaced (most) of the old structure. The bell ensures a prompt start!

RF-S-LD-03.jpg

4. Today the Patterdale Hall Estate is an Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Facilities include a touring camper van site (where we stayed in Frank!) and lodges which afford access the otherwise private estate grounds/ waterfall woods. (There is also private access available to a small area of shore on nearby Ullswater lake).

RF-S-LD-04.jpg

5. View across Ullswater (a lake around 7 miles long and 0.75 miles wide) towards Helvellyn (3,116ft in elevation, the 3rd highest mountain in the Lake District).

RF-S-LD-05.jpg

6. Lunch time - a welcome 'comfy' rock to sit on with a pleasant view on offer. (Note the lake cruiser is blended from another R system photo - so, genuine-ish).

The biggest bird in the sky!

Emirates, A380-800 jet. As soon as I hit the back button focus it went straight for the nose of the jet and never stopped tracking it.

Hi Chris,

A nailed on BIF. You have to ask yourself, how does that work then?...

Physics aside, a terrific capture of a remarkable bit of kit and quite a sight to behold - thank you for sharing... :)

Yes, I am kind of tired of ducks but they seem to be the main birds down at the riverfront near my home. These ones came in quite close so at 800mm filled the frame. View attachment 33028View attachment 33029View attachment 33030View attachment 33031View attachment 33032
Hi Chris,

You can never have enough ducks (well, unless they invade your home and refuse to leave...) - and what a bunch of cuties you've captured here!

Beautiful colours and rich with detail.

Thank you for sharing... :)

Some fall color photography from our trips to northern New England. The first photo is of Beaver Brook Falls in northern New Hampshire.

This is Belvedere Pond in Eden, Vermont. This pond is one of our favorite places to photograph, as even in lean fall color years it usually puts on a good show.
20240930_3239+3244+3249_FS.jpg

The Lake Willoughby area of Vermont also is a beautiful area. This view of the Lake is from Spectacle Rock State Park.

A farm along busy Route 2 in Vermont. I have often photographed this farm over the years. this year, their herd of cows was on the hill to the right so I didn't get the classic shot of cows and a farm.
20241001_3800.jpg

The Kancamagus Highway is an approximately 25 mile road through New Hampshire. It is a stunning drive with enough elevation changes that you usually get nice color somewhere along the busy road, which it is best to travel early to mid-morning to avoid the crowds.
20241002_4403.jpg

This photo is taken from the slopes of Mount Greylock in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts, showing the colorful foliage show and the fields of the area.
20241011_6075.jpg

Peck's Falls is also in the Berkshires and offered a nice opportunity for longer exposure waterfall photography.

Hi Don,

An amazing series of images showcasing the wonders of nature - beautiful scenery, with scintillatingly lush colours abounding.

(Having said that, we're suckers for flowing water, so the cascade shots are our favourites - though that road is rather special!).

A real joy to behold - thank you for sharing... :)

Our final images for this month are from visits to 'the next ones on the September Frank Fest list' - Fountains Abbey and Studley Water Garden, Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. (Please bear with us - only a couple more sets to go and we'll arrive in October... ).

(Shot raw and processed using: DxO PL Elite/ ViewPoint/ Nik Collection, Adobe LrC/ PS with Tony Kuyper Panels and Topaz Labs Studio 2. The compilations feature: R7 - Karen and R5 - Phil).

You can find out more about Fountains Abbey and Studley Water Garden Here and Studley Royal Park Here.

1. Fountains Abbey is the largest monastic ruin in Britain. The abbey was founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks who left St Mary’s Abbey in York to follow the Cistercian order. This went fairly well (but only for a while).

RF-S-FA1.jpg

2. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII (1536 - 1541), Fountains Estate was sold by the crown to Sir Richard Gresham - who had to render it incapable of future religious use as part of the deal.

RF-S-FA2.jpg

3. Incapablised Cloisters as art…

RF-S-FA3.jpg

4. John Aislabie inherited the adjacent Studley Royal Estate in 1683 and together with his son, William, created an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies.

RF-S-FA4.jpg

5. William purchased Fountains Abbey Estate in 1767 and incorporated the abbey ruins into the garden.

RF-S-FA5.jpg

6. In 1983 the property was acquired by the National Trust and in 1986 the site was granted World Heritage Site status.

Lovely fall colors!

Yesterday I spent the afternoon taking pictures of one of my granddaughters who will graduate high school next year. She wanted some casual portraits so we went to several locations. She is raising a lamb as part of the FFA (Future Farmer's of America) so we took some at the school barn. Then to a local botanical garden. As the sun went lower in the sky we went to an old historic steel truss bridge near our home. And just as the sun was about to set we ended up at a park down near the San Jacinto river. She will be 18 in February and hopes to go to a veterinary school for college; she wants to work with large animals such as livestock and horses.

I shot with the R6 MkII, love that eye tracking focus! Lenses were mostly the RF 70-200mm f/4 and my RF 85mm f/1.2

Hi Chris,

Another series of top drawer portraiture - your granddaughter must be absolutely thrilled and delighted with the results.

The shots are nailed on focus-wise, with perfect framing/ crops, beautiful lighting, rich colours/ alt. great use of B&W and pleasing poses and backdrops.

(What's not to like?!).

An inspiration to anyone finding themselves facing a similar shoot.

Well done all round - and thank you for sharing... :)

I really like the first B&W
Hi Only RF,

Cheers - very much appreciated! :)

The second I laid eyes on this scene my first thought was 'B&W' (next came 'and, of course, people-free' - which required a little time and plenty of patience!).

Thanksgiving Day in the US. Found a Turkey that won’t make it to the table.

Hi RW,

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving Day! Two splendid images which make us feel a little better about the -2 degrees C we 'enjoyed' yesterday morning.

Wonderful scenery - a joy to behold.

Well done (and good luck!) to the turkey - and thank you for sharing... :)

Made me shiver at first glance. Well done, from a place that never, ever has snow.

Hi Jeff,

An absolutely wonderful shot of a beautiful creature amid natural settings - the perfect subject 'look back' pose, eye catch-light fur detail and colours.

A fitting image to conclude this month's thread - well done indeed and thank you for sharing... :)
