  1. Yes
Looked at a friends software Helicon.
Nice software nice job.
But went away thinking I can do this in camera am I missing something?

AFAIK, it depends on the model.

I know the R5 will not do it in camera, I think at least the R6/II will.

The drawback is that in-camera stacking will spit out a JPEG.

In-camera stacking will not allow retouching.

That’s about the limits of my knowledge.

Helicon does do a great job, but it’s quirky and a bit unintuitive.

DPP will also do “Depth Composting” but again, you end up with a JPEG…and it’s painfully slooooow

yeah re jpeg
R5i has it as does R5ii not that I have mark ii maybe enhanced features on mark 2 not sure
My editing is crap anyway might as well do jpeg

I suggest you try a few different approaches and determine what your processing needs are and how they work for you. We have very pleased with Helicon, with only some really challenging photos needing retouching. But any approach that works for one person may not work as well for others; it can be dependent on your shooting style and your subjects.

Photoshop does a nice job, if you use Lightroom Classic and have the bundle. RAWS go from LRC into PS, PS does the "composting" (great choice of word), and you get a TIFF back in LRC.

Sometimes retouching is necessary - especially if something moves between shots in the stack. The example in the Helicon tutorial is pretty good. The little beastie moves his antennae during the stack resulting in a multi-antennae-d critter, so they paint in ONE set, from one shot.
