Hi

I have Canon R8 and plan a trip to Italy (Veneto region) & Paris.
I have 3 RF lenses : RF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM, RF 14-35 f/4 L IS USM and RF 100mm f/2,8 L IS USM Macro
I do not plan to bring the Macro lens, but I am wondering if only take the 14-35 was a good idea.
My prefered focal lenght is 35mm, so I am covered with both of them.

What do you think ?
Is taking only one of them is a good idea or bring both? I do not like to switch gear, so when out, I will only take one of them.

Note, it will be my first time in Veneto, but I am used to Paris.

It depends on what you want to photograph, and how you want to photograph it.

On another forum, someone asked a similar question, and folks recommended a good walkaround zoom that has a good wide angle at the wide end. The poster replied he was thinking of a 400mm lens - to which the others said nooo, a general purpose zoom would be much better. After many posts back and forth with the original poster still wanting to take the 400, he finally mentioned that his interest was photographing gargoyles.

So I would recommend a 400mm lens if you are going to photograph gargoyles, but for more common purposes, the 24-105L would be my choice.

I agree with both Archibald and SwampGrizz and would suggest the 24-105 zoom. It's a great travel lens, very versatile and capable as well. I don't shoot an R8, BUT I would caution against carrying too many lenses unless, of course, this trip is largely a photographic "tour". You'll come across too many situations where the mounted lens just isn't right for the situation, ergo the 24-105 zoom.

I agree, the 24-105 f4 is probably your best choice for all around photography, if you only want to take one lens. Unless you plan to do a lot of interior or night time shooting, then you may want something with a faster aperture. But then you're spending real money on a 24-70 f2.8 or 24-105 f2.8. And they are bigger and heavier, so there's that.

Definitely make sure you have a couple of extra batteries and memory cards with you though.

The RF 24-105L is the most used lens on my R8. It gives you wider than your preferred 35mm and much more reach at 105mm, so a versatile lens!

I took my R8, RF 35 1.8, and RF 16mm 2.8 with me to Rome and Florence. The 35 stayed on most of the time (used the 16mm mostly inside the Vatican) I never really needed longer so I think you'll be fine with your 14-35. I also have the 14-35 and if I were to do it again i might just bring that one so no lens changes. However, if your so inclined, the RF 35 1.8 /R8 is a wonderful small set up to carry all day. Good low light, IS, and macro too if you need it. Either way, if you really do need some more reach in a pinch you can hit up 1.6 crop mode to give you a poor mans 56mm (with a small file size)

Or just crop afterwards on the computer. Same thing.

Thanks to all of you for your answers.

No gargoyles for me :-)

I'll take the 24-105 to start.

And if, in the end, after all our luggage is packed, there's still space in my bag for the 14-35, I will consider it.

After all your stuff is packed in your roller luggage, take it for a walk around the block. When you get back, the contents will have settled, and there will be room for more stuff.

Lol, better get one of those luggage scales. It's easy to pack too heavy, especially with a full sized suitcase. When I was on tour full time, I was always over weight. Bought a luggage scale and it saved me a bunch of money every trip. (I won't tell you what I had to pay to bring my personal Pelican (a 1560) back from Canada, as a third checked bag, AND it was overweight. 🤬 )

Yeah, I see travellers at check-in with huge suitcases stacked one on top of the other. They want to take everything along. Me, I'm usually able to travel carry-on only. The carry-on bags hold my 100-500mm lens, two bodies, laptop, and other gear. And I still return from a 2-week trip not using some of the stuff I took.

More recently I take a checked bag because I have liquids, and to take in-case stuff like a raincoat.
