From a presenter whom I trust:

I think this poster, also in South Africa, was using the same lens as Janine:

Interesting introductions. But I'm afraid that the tiny wide zoom for APS-C shows me that Canon will never get serious about that format. Yes, you can stick the new 10-20 on it, but if you're going to carry FF lenses, well, get a FF body.

I agree. Canon is not showing much love to RF-S Shooters with their current focus being on beefing up their full-frame line-up which is clearly where the money is. Hopefully at some point we will see more interesting RF-S lenses but I'm not going to hold my breath. Sony also neglects their APS-C shooters and its typically third-parties that step in but the autofocus is never as good.

David, I agree you and FWIW Janine is a professional photographer and a very good one at that. I had the pleasure to work with her while on safari last March. She works closely with Canon and is a photographical wizard. I fully trust whatever she may say.

Yeah, and I can take a hint. No crop body for me even though I'd love a quality kit for travel. Not from Canon, I guess. And Fuji? Nice, but why are the bodies so big?

My immediate reaction was "I must have that lens!" and later, after counselling myself against rashness, "Can I afford it?".

The following size comparison really made me think:

Canon RF telephoto zooms

RF telephoto lenses (from L to R):
  • 100–400
  • 100–500
  • 600
  • 800
  • 200–800
All lenses are in their collapsed state. The RF 200–800's tripod-mounting collar cannot be removed (100–500's can).

Geez, it's huge. I'll stick with my 100-500 and 1.4TC.

So the price in the US for the 24-105 2.8 is $2999 (£2445.95), and yet in the UK it is £3439, why is this? Even with tax added in US it is $3664.60 (£2989.56)

I hate to add fuel to your fire, but sales tax in the US is not as large as you estimated. Sales tax is set by city and state, but I believe the highest is 10.25% in Chicago, so the highest expected sale price in the US is probably around $3374. FWIW, I've always wondered why electronics are cheaper here than most other places (perhaps import duties and tariffs).
