Hi

According to canonrumors.com (post February 20, 2023 here) the R8 was reportedly going to be available starting on April 18th, 2023.
And recently, on cameraegg.org "availability tracker" (last update April 21st, 2023 here) it seems it is quite available in Amazon, B&H, Adorama etc.

But, do we have member who pre-order it have and it in their hand ?

Please share if you have your copy.

Thanks

I pre-ordered mine immediately when they showed up on the website. The #2 photo specialist here in .nl received slightly more than 600 R8 kits which wasn't enough for their pre-orders by a long shot. A smaller camera store received one more R8 than their number of pre-orders, on the 18th they showed to have a single unit in stock :)

You asked if someone had an R8 in hand:

My pre-order was placed on March 31 with B&H and it shipped on April 18.

What is the point of this camera? R6II lite?

[edit] after a bit of reading, looks like it's about 1000 bucks cheaper than R6 and is smaller with some mixture of added/removed features. I suppose I could see the appeal for someone upgrading from a much older camera.

I placed my pre-order in mid-March at one of the bigger photography specialist stores here in Vienna and picked it up on April 18.

I just received a call from the shop in Montréal (Canada) where I pre-ordered it, a little shop down town, they receiver x4 R8.
I will get mine monday ;-)

Essentially the R8 has the performance of the R6ii in a smaller, lighter body at $1000 less money. There are trade-offs in ergonomics, weather sealing & no full mechanical shutter, but for someone like me, coming from an RP, it's a very tempting upgrade. I tried an R6ii recently, it's a fantastic camera, but I've got used to the smaller, lighter RP and found myself wishing it was smaller. I will defenitly try an R8 when the opportunity arises. One of those 2 cameras (or a discounted R6) will likely be the eventual replacement for my RP.

Hi

Well, as an hobbyist, I change camera body every 10 years, coming from 7D Mki, the R8 will be my first Full Frame.

Why the R8 instead of the R6Mkii?, obviously the price, for 1.000$ less I can afford a great RF lens.

Why the R8 instead of the R or RP? For the autofocus of the R6Mkii, I do not care about a 2nd card slot, nor for IBIS, I like smaller battery, less power for sure but also less weight and a compact body.

I moved from the 7D1 to the RP and I found the RP to be better in pretty much every way, except battery life. I did need the EG-E1 for larger lenses.

Now that I have both the R8 and R5, I really notice how much Canon improved things in 2.5 years. The R5 now feels slow and clunky!

Very happy with the R8

Apparently, here in Canada, if you wanted to have it quickly, you'd better pre-ordered in a "small" serious shop.

I was their only pre-order, and they received ×4 R8.
