I noticed pictures posted on the site do not have the name of the photographer on the images. Is this the rule of how photos are to be posted on the forum? Are the photos on the forum protected from a right click and copy?

Hi Kathryn. Thanks for asking. There are no rules about image watermarks here, it's really up to the photographer if they add one or not, some will and some won't. Images aren't currently protected from right clicking and saving, I thought about adding something but it's too easy to get around most methods for those that really want to steal images. The best protection is to just upload a lower resolution image like max 800px etc along with a watermark.

A friend of mine posts plenty of pictures he's taken elsewhere and they have occasionally appeared in tourist brochures or news articles, mostly with prior approval but not always. He is flattered that they think his pics are worthy but so far his photos of Cornwall have been used to advertise tourism in Wales and Bulgaria but not yet in Cornwall. He's so laid back he doesn't mind in the slightest. Despite what he keeps telling us, he really is a good photographer. It's just all his kit is the unmentionable opposition.

I can't speak for what's popular anywhere else, but a lot of professionals in the US don't bother with a watermark for digitals because it's too easy to remove it with the software available now. I have copyright information embedded in any image metadata I'm worried about, and the act of posting them online actually affords us some copyright protection, because it shows we had it BEFORE the person stealing it.

Usually, if you see one of my images with a signature, it'll be because it's an image someone expressed interest in printing, and I watermark it so I can sell the print directly, and I was too lazy to re-export the image again without the signature before posting it.
