When lenses fail, do they fail slowly or all at once? I took my used 17-40mm to Europe last year and it worked great on the R5m2. Today I took the lens off the shelf for a spin, and It fails on both the R5m2 and the R7. And it fails with both of Canon's EF-RF adapters (with control ring and without).

When connected to the R7, it hesitates for a long moment and then appears to enter Manual Focus mode. But the image on the LCD screen is static - as if it's in permanent photo preview mode - and then it goes black.

When connected to the R5m2, the body makes a faint, intermittent clicking noise until the lens is removed.

My EF 70-200mm F/2.8L functions properly, so I'm thinking the 17-40 is dead. Or might it be revived by resetting the camera to factory settings? What do you think? Is there any hope? ;)

Have you tried carefully cleaning the contacts on the lens? I personally would use a lens cleaning cloth moistened with a bit of 99% alcohol, and very gently wipe the contacts.
Some people suggest using a pencil eraser, which I have done in the past, but I feel more comfortable with an alcohol moistened lens wipe today.

If cleaning doesn't fix it, then I would suspect an internal contact problem. If you really like the lens, I would investigate having it repaired and adjusted etc. Or maybe look for a good deal on another used one in good condition and sell the defective lens on ebay with full disclosure of its problems. Someone will buy it just to repair it themselves.

One final thought, have you tried the lens with the lens set to manual focus on the lens itself?

I have some 99% alcohol, and just tried cleaning the contacts. No luck.

Yes. Also no luck.

The lens is still covered by MPB's 6-month warranty. I've purchased a lot of gear from them, but never had to use the warranty service. I'll post here about how it goes...

It is bad that you are having a problem, but good that it is still under warranty. Hopefully they either repair or replace it very quickly. I am interested in how they handle it. I have bought several items from MPB here in Europe, but luckily have not had any problems so far.
