Until now my carry-around camera has been a Ricoh GRII. On the plus side it is small and light with an APS-C sensor, a sharp lens, and IBIS. On the negative side it doesn't have a viewfinder. In bright light or even not so bright light, I can't see image in the LCD. One thing I knew was that I was not going to take my R6 on holiday because it's too heavy at 680g. I tried an R50 and now I have settled on an R10. I will marry it with a 16mm or a 28mm - and the only puzzle left is what to carry it in. Some kind of easy access pouch so I can put that in a messenger bag. Does anyone have a suggestion for a padded pouch or something similar? I have a Billingham for the R6 but I need something like a messenger bag for dragging around on holiday, filled with the usual. This photo of the escalator at Canary Wharf in London is the second one I took, the first being a shot in the flat to be sure the thing worked before I took it out. And then the kayaks in the pool at Canary Wharf - take you choice as to whether you think it is a vision of dystopian hell or a creative use of the space.

Oh, and I used the kit lens that came with it - the Canon RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens - so that I could see for myself whether it was OK or not OK because two of the reviewers I think are good at reviewing stuff have opposite views on the lens.

Not sure if you already have the messenger bag in question, but for "lite" travel I'm pretty happy with my Tenba Sling. I have an R5, RF100-400 and an RF 85 in there. There's room for another smaller lens in the main compartment as well. The secondary compartment will hold keys, glasses, phone etc. Not sure which size I ended up with, but it's a bit tight - not terrible, but I could use a teensy bit more room. (I often joke I should have gotten the Elevenba). With your smaller kit it would work fine. I also have a couple of straps across the front, if I want to lash on a jacket or something.

I find it stays in place quite well when walking, but when I spin it around for access, it feels secure as a "work platform".

OTOH, if you're left handed like my wife, it's a nonstarter.

@DavidB , those are great shots, especially the first IMO.

I don't know how anyone can recommend a bag to someone else, so I better not. But I can tell you what I use, when I use a bag.

Most of the time on shorter photo outings, I don't use a bag. But I will often use a bag on longer outings, and also if there seems to be a need to conceal the gear. For that, I use an old war surplus canvas bag. It doesn't hint that there is a camera in there. The strap allows slinging the gear low on the middle of my back. For me, that is the most comfortable way to carry heavy stuff on longer outings.

Those are great images. I can't really recommend a bag since I almost always carry a backpack and have too much gear to tote around. I Mindshift gear makes a few nice bags.

Are you looking for a messenger-type camera bag or some kind of pouch to hold your camera in a regular messenger bag?

If it's the first, I'm a fan of Think Tank Retrospective bags. They're kind a the Domke bag for digital cameras. I use a Retrospective 7 for carrying an R10 with a normal zoom attached and 2 spare lenses. I also have a Retrospective 5 that does the same thing with only 1 spare lens. The R7 is about the size of a standard messenger bag briefcase. The R5 is more like a squarish pouch or a purse. They're both easy to get gear in and out of.
