It looks much better when I scroll up the screen to cover the dark band at the top.
You may be right. I thought that leaving it there may add some 3D feeling to it.

I wonder if you tried a 4x6 ratio vertical crop starting just to the left and a little above its leg. That will create a vertical crop hiding most of the dark fuzzy part. It is moving on a vertical path, a vertical crop may add more dynamism to it. But, all said, the idea and the image are yours. I am hypothesizing! Colorful critter!

Much better from my perspective. The subject dominates the frame. The empty space in the previous crop was not doing anything positive. I enjoy this crop.

I don't like free forms.
 
Do you mean free-form crops? My original suggestion was a 4x6 aspect ratio, vertical crop.
Yes. The 4x6 vertical did not work too well. May be I didn't try hard to make it work.
