Hi everyone, my name is Richard, this is my first post and only my second day of being a new member to this forum. I just opened the box of my new R8 kit yesterday and still getting used to all the settings of the camera. My previous camera was an Olympus E510 (2007 era) so things have changed for me quite a bit now. Still looking for a telephoto lens somewhere in the neighbourhood (that's right I'm Canadian) of 100 - 300mm or 400mm with a RF mount and hopefully a USM.

I live in Kitchener Ontario, where the weather is just starting to turn cold (Nov. 2024). I enjoy shooting nature scenes as well as vacation and family events. My old setup was a four thirds body with lenses from 14mm all the way up to 300mm, so I have a ways to go in getting this coverage again. I will be looking for advice and tips on the use of the new rig and the lenses. I don't know if I will be posting a lot of images but if I do I don't mind Constructive Criticism. Thanks for reading my intro, I will be visiting the forum often.

Welcome to the forum Richard. I look forward to seeing some of your images. This is a really nice, and helpful forum.

Hello Richard, welcome to the forum and congrats on the R8!

Welcome! I'm an R8 user as well, and not far from you - I live in the Hamilton area. I've been using and loving my R8 since the day they were released last April, and I hope that you enjoy yours as well.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, I already got a new lens the other day, traded my 24-50 in and got a 24-105 for better range. Hope to get the RF100-400 USM sometime soon. Still messing with the settings and trying to get comfortable with the camera. Is there a way to keep the AF area in the center of the frame in auto.

The 24-105mm will serve you well. Which one did you pick up?

The 100-400mm is a fantastic lens for the price. When I want something with decent range that is an all day carry this is my go to lens. This was one of only two lenses I carried in Costa Rica and the R6 MkII and the 100-400mm took a couple thousand frames.

That was the lens I bought with my R5 and I am VERY pleased with it. Fairly light, decent reach at the long end and good close focus distance. It’s my “daily driver”. I have a picture of a whitetail deer that was about a 70% crop, that I printed about 18x24 and it’s tack sharp.

Yeah, I’d like it to be a bit faster and weather-sealed, but then it’d be a lot heavier and a helluva lot more money. For the price, I keep feeling like I got away with something.

Not sure what you mean by which one but if you mean STM VS USM I got an STM.

Oh, sorry, its an RF with a F4 - 7.1. And I just ordered the 100-400 RF USM, found an open box deal for $720 CA instead of $800 or $880. Next up is an ultra wide, just have to do some research but I'm looking at the 18-30 IS STM. any thoughts?

Nice, with two lens you have some decent range covering 24 to 400mm.

Both lenses are fairly light so going out for a day carrying both should be no problem. Nice start to you stable of lenses.

The only thing you may want to consider for your next lens purchase is wrapped around this question, are you going to be photographing in low light? If you are planning to shoot low light the two lenses you currently own will struggle in the indoors, morning and evening as the sun is low on the horizon. if you think you will be shooting under these scenarios then you are going to want to look for a faster lens, at least a constant f4 or even better a f2.8.
