Just joined the forum so Hi folks.
Actually, I'm after some advice pls, My gear has become too heavy (Nikon d500 and tamrom 150-600 g2) for me to hold steady, so I'm looking at trading it in for the Canon R6 2 and the 100-500 lens which weighs in a lot less! Has anyone on the forum got this setup and how do you rate it?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Cliff,

Welcome! :)

I have that lens (which I would rate as 'absolutely fantastic'), but not that body.

I recommend you visit The-Digital-Picture.com for detailed written reviews of the R6II and RF 100-500.

(Hopefully someone will pick-up your main question, but if not here maybe try the 'Open Talk' forum?).

Phil

Cheers Phil will do and thanks for the reply.

I recently upgraded from the R6 Mk1 to the Mk2 and have the RF 100-500mm but I’ve only had one outing with them so far (sports cars at Silverstone). I think the combination handles extremely well and very similar to the Mk 1 + 100-500 as you’d expect. As you say, the Canon combination is much lighter than the Nikon + Tamron and the stabilisation available from the Canon IBIS and lens helps with any unsteadiness.

Welcome Cliff and thank you for joining up here. The RF 100-500 is a cracking lens although overpriced in my eyes. I use it on the R5 so can't comment on its performance on the R6 Mark II but I'm pretty confident that it won't disappoint.

Thanks for the replies folks(y). I've had a good look around at images taken with the R62 and 100-500 lens combo and I must say I'm impressed. I still can't make my mind up though as it would mean parting with 4k as well as putting my D500 (which I love) and the Tammy 150-600 G2 in px as well, but that combo is getting too heavy for my old body to cope with! so big decision time ahead.

Cheers again
Cliff.

Hi mate, I have the R6II and the RF 100-500 and its a stunning combination. The combo isn't featherweight but I would imagine way lighter than your kit.

Cheers Chimpy that's encouraging pal. How do you find the viewfinder compared to an optical one btw ?

Hi mate, I've been in the "R" system for years now so I don't find the viewfinder a problem, in fact it's so much better than an optical VF.
For one what you see is what you get regarding exposure and DOF also you get so much more customisable information displayed in the VF.

When I get the chance and I can figure how to do it I will post up a few images taken with the 100-500 and R6II it's a cracking combo for wildlife, it's a fantastic camera body that is worth every penny in my opinion, I prefer using it to my overpriced R3!

It's years since I had a camera with an electronic VF and it was like watching a telly! also had lag when panning, obviously things have improved so going to get off my backside tomorrow and make the trip to Liverpool and hopefully Wilkinsons will have the combo in stock....hopefully!
Look forward to seeing your images.

Cliff.

Sounds like a plan Cliff 👍 it looks like you are my neck of the woods where are you living mate ?
P.S the EVFs have come on in leaps and bounds since the original EOS R, I don't notice any lag.
